Emergency service workers rescued a man trapped in a car by floods that hit Spain. The floods were caused by a slow-moving storm system, known as a depresión aislada en niveles altos (Dana). The rescue took place in Castelló province, with the car surrounded by waist-high flood water. Aerial footage shows a partially collapsed bridge over the Alberche river in Spain after torrential rain caused flash flooding across parts of the country. The Alberche runs through the provinces of Avila, Madrid and Toledo in central Spain, where emergency services were involved in almost 1,200 incidents in the region overnight. Helicopter footage of the collapsed structure was shared on social media by Madrid’s security and emergency agency on Monday morning (4 September). The sudden torrential rain that hit Spain transformed streets around the capital - as well as other coastal areas - into muddy rivers.

Spanish police seize 25 tonnes of endangered eels destined for smuggling. The Spanish Guardia Civil posted a video on Twitter/X with footage of the find. The bust was part of anti-smuggling operation “ASKEZ IV-LAKE”, a Guardia Civil project in cooperation with Europol as well as different European and American partners. ”Thirty suspects have been arrrested in Spain, seizing 18 tons of European eel (Anguilla anguilla) which would have an estimated value of €20 million in the black market,” the post read.

Ukraine's Ministry of Defence has released footage of a soldier appearing to use a drone to shoot at a Russian truck. This clip, posted on Twitter/X on Wednesday (30 August), purportedly shows a border guard from the "Steel Border" unit watching on as a shot hits the vehicle. Footage shows fierce winds hitting Mallorca as a P&O cruise ship collided with a freight vessel on Sunday, 27 August. The ship, which was carrying thousands of British holidaymakers, collided with a petrol tanker after it broke free of its moorings during a storm. A small number of people are injured, the cruise operator confirmed. “P&O Cruises Britannia was involved in a weather-related incident while alongside in Palma de Mallorca. Russian president Vladimir Putin was seen at a concert as reports circulated that Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin was on a plane that crashed near Moscow, killing everyone onboard. Footage showed Putin at an event dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Soviet troops’ victory in the Battle of Kursk during World War II. Russian officials have said Prigozhin - who led an attempted coup in Russia in June - was on a private jet that crashed in the Tver region on 23 August. The Russian news agency TASS reported that ten people died in the crash.

Spanish law enforcement officers have intercepted a boat carrying 1,543 pounds (700kg) of cocaine off the coast of the Canary Islands, police said on Tuesday (22 August). Four suspects were arrested. They were part of a wider criminal organisation in charge of trying to smuggle large amounts of cocaine from South America into Europe, police said. The joint operation to arrest the suspects, which began in 2022, was led by the Spanish Guardia Civil and Europol, also involved Croatian and Serbian police as well as investigators from Palermo in Italy.

Ukrainian troops evacuated residents trapped in the southeastern village of Robotyne, in Zaporizhzhia region, on Tuesday (22 August) according to the country's defence ministry. Soldiers from the 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade used US-made Bradley tanks to rescue civilians from the important regional rail hub occupied by Russia, Ukrainian officials said. Russian forces have been accused of continuously shelling Robotyne with artillery fire. Ukrainian troops entering the strategic southeastern village could be a potentially significant advance in its counteroffensive against Russian forces.

Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood will leave the club after both parties concluded it would be inappropriate for the forward to continue his career at Old Trafford.
