Leaders of Murcia’s city and region’s political institutions have held a moment’s silence and applause in honour of the victims of Sunday’s disco blaze. A total of 13 people were killed as a consequence of the fire and 24 more were injured. Firefighters and police continued to search the damaged premises for clues as to how the fire started in Murcia, a university city in southeastern Spain. The blaze started in a nightclub around 6am on Sunday 1 October and spread to two others nearby, Spanish state news agency EFE said. All the bodies were found in the first nightclub. At least one civilian was injured during the Russian bombardment of a residential area in Kostyantynivka, Ukraine, officials said. Firefighters extinguished fires at the scene on Wednesday 27 September and pulled down the remains of a damaged roof as the house’s owner, Olena Kononenko, looked on. Liudmila Ivanchuk, another resident, said the windows shattered during the bombardment and that she was taken to hospital for stitches. “Everything was falling on me. The door was stuck. Social network X, formerly known as Twitter, is the biggest source of fake news according to a top EU official. X is “the platform with the largest ratio of mis- or disinformation posts,” European Commission Vice President Vera Jourova said. She urged the platform’s owner, Elon Musk, to comply with the bloc’s laws aimed at combating disinformation. The European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, released a study of six online platforms in Poland, Slovakia and Spain that found Twitter had the highest prevalence of disinformation and biggest ratio of disinformation actors.

Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan, who both face human trafficking charges in Romania, appeared at a Bucharest court on Tuesday (26 September). Footage showed the brothers answering questions from a reporter as they made their way to court. The hearing was to ask that the current judicial measures imposed on them be lifted, alongside measures that saw a number of their assets seized during investigations. The court postponed making a decision on the judicial measures until this Thursday and set a new date to discuss the asset seizures for early November. The Tate brothers are charged in Romania with rape, human trafficking and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women. They deny the charges against them. Drone footage shows the extent of destruction in the village of Klishchiivka in eastern Ukraine after months of fierce fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces. Ukraine’s military said it seized Klishchiivka from Russian troops on 17 September. The village is about 10km (6 miles) south of the Russian-controlled town of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region. Retaking Klishchiivka is considered tactically important, allowing Ukrainian forces to further extend their gains around Bakhmut. The commanding heights of the village offer a view into Bakhmut and could open up new opportunities for Ukrainian forces to encircle the town. Read More

Explosions from a Russian drone attack on the Ukrainian region of Odesa were captured from a ferry on the Danube River. Romanian Border Police said in a statement on Tuesday 26 September that traffic through the Danube crossing in Isaccea, Tulcea County, has been closed due to the attacks on the Ukrainian side. A video posted online by a person who was crossing the river showed explosions in Ukraine that could be seen from across the border. The statement from Romanian Border Police said that traffic was being redirected through Galati, a town situated on the Danube upstream from Isaccea.

Jessica Hawkins has become the first woman in almost five years to test a Formula 1 car, completing 26 laps of the Hungaroring in Budapest for Aston Martin last Thursday. The former W Series racer, 28, alternated in the AMR21 car with test and reserve driver Felipe Drugovich. Hawkins, a former British Karting Champion, joined the Aston Martin F1 Team in 2021 as Driver Ambassador and her role within the team has since expanded. Before Hawkins, the most recent woman to test an F1 car was Colombia’s Tatiana Calderon with Sauber - now Alfa Romeo - at the Hermanos Rodriguez track in Mexico City in October 2018.

The Kosovar government has released drone video showing a group of Serbian gunmen storming an Orthodox monastery in Kosovo on Sunday, 24 September. Around 30 masked men fled to the monastery after opening fire on police near the village of Banjska in northern Kosovo, killing one officer and injuring another. The stand-off ended when most of the assailants escaped on foot under cover of darkness on Sunday evening. Three of the gunmen were shot and killed by Kosovar police.

British Royal Engineers sappers have given training to Ukrainian soldiers to help them disable mines, munitions and other explosive devices that are being used in the war in Ukraine. Mines present one of the biggest obstacles to the Ukrainian Armed Forces as they seek to take back occupied land from Russia. Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said: “Putin’s illegal invasion has left Ukraine’s fields and towns covered in deadly landmines and unexploded munitions, which presents an immediate danger to its citizens now and for years to come. “The Royal Engineers are using their world-leading experience to train Ukraine’s bomb disposal experts, who can pass on these lifesaving skills to their own recruits and ensure a safer future for all Ukrainians.”

Volodymyr Zelensky met with Joe Biden at the White House on Thursday 21 September. The president of Ukraine arrived alongside First Lady Olena Zelenska and was seen shaking hands with Mr Biden and Jill Biden, First Lady of the United States. Mr Zelensky, who earlier visited Capitol Hill and the Pentagon, capped his visit to Washington with an Oval Office meeting. He said he felt “trust” between himself and top American officials and expressed gratitude for the defence support that has allowed his armed forces to “combat Russian terror”. Volodymyr Zelensky said he had a “very strong dialogue” with senators after his behind-closed-doors meeting on Capitol Hill on Thursday 21 September. The president of Ukraine made a trip to Washington DC this week to shore up US support for his nation. During his visit, Mr Zelensky met with the entire Senate, but only a select few House leaders attended a meeting on the other side of Capitol Hill. “We spoke about support, about the situation on the battlefield, about our class. I can’t share with you all the details, but I think we had a very strong dialogue with senators,” he told reporters.
