Friends creators reveal Matthew Perry was 'happy' in their final conversation with him
The creators of Friends have shared how Matthew Perry was "in a really good place," two weeks before his sudden death. The 54-year-old's death was confirmed after was found unresponsive in a hot tub at his home in Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon. In an interview preview from the Today show that will air today (November 1) Marta Kauffman and David Crane spoke to the actor who played Chandler Bing in their popular sitcom for a decade. “It was great,” Kauffman said about the last conversation she had with Perry. “He was happy and chipper. He didn’t seem weighed down by anything. He was in a really good place, which is why this seems so unfair.” Kauffman, Crane along with executive producer Bright also released a statement together after news broke of Perry's unexpected death. "We are shocked and deeply, deeply saddened by our beloved friend Matthew’s passing," they said. "He was a brilliant talent. It’s a cliche to say that an actor makes a role their own, but in Matthew’s case, there are no truer words. From the day we first heard him embody the role of Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us. "We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment – not just to his work, but in life as well. He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart. They concluded: "We send all of our love to his family and friends. This truly is The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken." Perry's fellow Friends castmates also released a joint tribute on Monday (October 30). “We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family,” the sitcom stars wrote in a statement to People. “There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss,” they continued. “In time we will say more, as and when we are able. For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world.” How to join the indy100's free WhatsApp channel Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Sharon Osbourne dresses as Kanye West's 'wife' wearing a pillow for Halloween
This year, celebrities treated Halloween as the second Met Gala, going above and beyond for their star-studded bashes. From Heidi Klum's impressive peacock look (complete with 10 Cirque du Soleil performers) to Kendall Jenner as Marilyn Monroe and her famed Kardashian sisters cosplaying as Bratz dolls, they all collectively won Halloween. Even Hailey Bieber seemingly made a tongue-in-cheek reference to Mean Girls after TikTokers cruelly called her the new Regina George following a clash with Selena Gomez earlier this year. Well now, attention has been turned to Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne who creatively dressed up as Kanye West and Bianca Censori with her infamous pillow outfit. Sharon's post to Instagram left followers in hysterics, with one person calling it "the greatest thing I've ever seen." "LMAO KANYE AND HIS WIFE GIRL BYE SLAY SHARON," another user added, while a third commented: "You guys are epic! Looking great, Sharon!" Meanwhile, some people were lost and did not quite understand the pop culture reference... For the blissfully unaware, Kanye and his rumoured wife made headlines over the summer during their trip across Italy. Many outfits turned heads for their risque nature – but one in particular, was Censori covering herself with a hotel pillow. The snaps sparked confusion and backlash online, with one writing: "How completely ridiculous these people are. Put on some clothes and then you won’t have to take a hotel room cushion out sightseeing with you - and you even get your arms free! Novel concept." Meanwhile, one person called their behaviour "unhinged," writing: "Kanye & Bianca Censori are unhinged. Someone ought to stage an intervention. Wearing a pillow? Him walking in socks?" ‘Mermaid mummy’ from Japan found to be a Frankenstein's mix of body parts
Frankenstein’s monsters aren’t just for Halloween, as a team of US scientists have recently discovered. The experts at Northern Kentucky University (NKU) were tasked with analysing the remains of a supposed mummified “mermaid”, and what they found was pretty gruesome. The mummy was brought to America from Japan more than 100 years ago after being donated it to the Clark County Historical Society in Springfield, Ohio. It arrived at the society in 1906 but documents supplied alongside the strange specimen suggest it dates back to the mid-1800s. This means that for some 170 years, the true identity of the wisened, 29-cm-long creature remained a mystery. However, thanks to modern technology, the team at NKU has finally worked out that the sinister-looking “siren” is, in fact, a ghoulish hybrid of monkey, fish and lizard. Joseph Cress, who led the project, told Live Science that he and his colleagues used X-ray and CT scans to investigate the creepy cadaver. "This allowed us to see [the mummy] in almost every dimension in the hopes to see what was inside it," he explained. They determined that that the “mermaid” consists of the head and torso of a monkey sewed onto the body of a fish, and its “hands” are the clawed legs of a lizard – most likely a Komodo dragon. The scans also revealed a pair of wooden stakes hidden inside the chimeric corpse – one running from head to tail and another across the shoulder blades — which were presumably inserted to keep the monster in one piece. Cress and his colleagues are currently trying to reconstruct a more detailed model of the mermaid and its individual components, according to Live Science. Once these models are complete, they plan to send them to zoos and aquariums to help confirm the different parts on a species level. However, jaw-dropping this specimen may be, it's not the only “mermaid” to be debunked in recent times. In March 2022, researchers analysed a similar example that was found in a hidden box in a Japanese temple. They also expected the creature, which was 30.5 cm long and dated back to the mid-1700s, to be a monkey-fish hybrid. However, tests conducted in February this year revealed that it was, in fact, predominantly made of cloth, paper and cotton. It had been painted with sand and charcoal and held together by metal pins, while various animal parts, including fish skin and mammal hair, had been stuck to it. Experts believe that the two “mermaids” were made to resemble "ningyo" — hideous fish-like creatures with human heads and sharp claws from Japanese mythology. According to legend, a nun named Yaobikuni lived for 800 years and retained the youthful appearance of a young woman, after eating a ningyo. Her immortality made the creatures a symbol of longevity, so it’s likely that fraudsters tried to recreate the mermaids to sell them to wealthy seekers of immortality. Still, at least the owners of these two examples didn’t make the mistake of trying to eat them. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. The 6 biggest talking points from Joe Rogan's podcast with Elon Musk
Elon Musk rocked up on The Joe Rogan Experience once again this week – and as you’d expect, there were plenty of talking points. His appearances on the show have always raised eyebrows. The first time he was on The Joe Rogan Experience, Musk made a splash by smoking (and choking on) a large joint. This time was no different, with Musk kicking off by lighting a cigar and speaking to Rogan, who was wearing a blonde wig and a Puerto Rico shirt throughout the interview to mark Halloween. Here are the biggest talking points from the new interview. Shooting a Tesla Cybertruck The long-awaited Tesla Cybertruck is (finally) almost here, and the pair talked about the durability of the build construction of the new model. Then, Rogan took things into his own hands and made a modest $1 bet with Musk, one of the richest people on the planet, that he could pierce the bodywork by shooting it with a bow and arrow. He then took himself down to the garage Musk’s car was parked in and shot it – in the end, it was Musk who won the bet. Slamming George Soros Musk once again criticised billionaire financier and philanthropist George Soros, who previously annoyed Musk by dumping Tesla stock. “He is, I believe, the top contributor to the Democratic party. The second one was Sam Bankman-Fried,” Musk said. “And Soros, he had a very difficult upbringing… In my opinion, he fundamentally hates humanity. That's my opinion.” He went on to criticise Soros by saying: “He's doing things that erode the fabric of civilization - getting DAs elected who refuse to prosecute crime. “That's part of the problem in San Francisco, and LA, and a bunch of other cities.” Buying Twitter to prevent the “mind virus” Discussing why he wanted to buy Twitter in the first place, Musk said that he wanted to save civilisation. “This is going to sound melodramatic but I was worried that it was having a corrosive effect on civilization,” he said. “Just having a bad impact.” He blamed the city of San Francisco, where the headquarters of the company is located, on liberal attitudes “infecting” staff. “I think part of it is where it's located - which is downtown San Francisco. While I think San Francisco is a beautiful city and we should fight really hard to right the ship of San Francisco. “But if you walk around downtown San Francisco, right near the X headquarters, it's the zombie apocalypse. It's really rough.” He added: “That philosophy is one which was being piped to earth. So, a philosophy that would ordinarily be quite niche, and quite restrained, so the fallout area was limited, was effectively given as an information weapon. Musk went on to say: “Information technology weapon to propagate what is essentially a mind virus to earth. “And the mind virus is very clear if you walk the streets of downtown San Francisco. It is the end of civilization.” Poking fun at Meta’s Threads The pair then discussed the noise surrounding Meta’s Threads, which was launched as a rival to Twitter in the summer. Rogan spoke about the mass emigration to the new social media platform. While it seemed popular at first, the number of regular users has dropped off dramatically. The host said: “It just dropped off within a couple of weeks. Now it's a f***ing ghost town." Musk added: "I mean, [Mark Zuckerberg] himself doesn't post. You gotta use your own product." Claiming Zuckerberg pulled out of their fight Remember back in the summer? It was a simpler time, when two of the richest men on the planet vowed to knock seven bells out of each other in a fight – that never actually happened. Musk and Meta’s Zuckerberg supposedly agreed to fight each other a while back and it never happened. Now, though, Musk claimed during the interview with Rogan that it was Zuckerberg and not him who pulled out of the bout. “I’ll fight you any place, anywhere, under any rules,” Musk stated. Sharing Covid conspiracy theories and criticising people who choose to wear masks Musk spent a chunk of the interview claiming that ventilators used during the pandemic damaged the lungs of patients, saying that the “treatment is worse than the disease”. He and Rogan also went on to criticise people who still chose to wear masks, with Rogan saying: "I think you're gonna be okay [without the mask]. You're probably not gonna be okay breathing that f****ing same air in that mask and all the bacteria spitting out." "Most of the time, a mask is not good for you,” Musk added. Heidi Klum steals Halloween once more with costume involving 10 Cirque du Soleil performers
Heidi Klum has unveiled her 2023 Halloween costume at her annual New York party - and she's totally stolen the show, as usual. Off the back of last year's worm look, the model this year opted for something big and bold, that involved 10 Cirque du Soleil to bring it to life on the red carpet. Klum dressed as the head and neck of a peacock, while those with her represented each of its feathers, creating an incredible illusion. We didn't expect any less. Mariah Carey reveals she's 'defrosting' with iconic 1 November post
Halloween is over, which means it's basically Christmas. In Mariah Carey's eyes at least. Keeping up her annual tradition, the singer released a video to Instagram of the clock striking midnight on 1st November, and her subsequent defrosting. As the ice melts away, her hit track 'All I Want For Christmas' plays out, and she whistles her iconic: "It's time!" It's a long-running joke that Mariah Carey owns the festive season, and if that doesn't get us into the Christmas spirit, nothing will. Click here to sign up for our newsletters.
