Spanish police seize 25 tonnes of endangered eels destined for smuggling. The Spanish Guardia Civil posted a video on Twitter/X with footage of the find. The bust was part of anti-smuggling operation “ASKEZ IV-LAKE”, a Guardia Civil project in cooperation with Europol as well as different European and American partners. ”Thirty suspects have been arrrested in Spain, seizing 18 tons of European eel (Anguilla anguilla) which would have an estimated value of €20 million in the black market,” the post read.

The release of the footage came as UK officials said Vladimir Putin faces the largest attack on Russia since the start of the war after it was hit by five separate drone strikes overnight on 29 and 30 August.

Russian president Vladimir Putin was seen at a concert as reports circulated that Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin was on a plane that crashed near Moscow, killing everyone onboard. Russian officials have said Prigozhin - who led an attempted coup in Russia in June - was on a private jet that crashed in the Tver region on 23 August. Spanish law enforcement officers have intercepted a boat carrying 1,543 pounds (700kg) of cocaine off the coast of the Canary Islands, police said on Tuesday (22 August). Four suspects were arrested. They were part of a wider criminal organisation in charge of trying to smuggle large amounts of cocaine from South America into Europe, police said. The joint operation to arrest the suspects, which began in 2022, was led by the Spanish Guardia Civil and Europol, also involved Croatian and Serbian police as well as investigators from Palermo in Italy.

Soldiers from the 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade used US-made Bradley tanks to rescue civilians from the important regional rail hub occupied by Russia, Ukrainian officials said. Russian forces have been accused of continuously shelling Robotyne with artillery fire. Ukrainian troops entering the strategic southeastern village could be a potentially significant advance in its counteroffensive against Russian forces.
