Ancient Mayan city discovered in remote jungle that was previously 'impossible' to find
It feels like every day there’s a science story that comes along ready to blow our tiny minds, and today is no exception. A series of ancient interconnected cities have been discovered in the remote El Mirador jungle Guatemala, and it’s changing our entire understanding of the ancient civilisation. More than 400 settlements have been uncovered with some dating back as far as 1,000 BC. They’re linked by roads too, and it’s led them to be described as “the first freeway system in the world”. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Richard Hansen, a research professor at the University of Idaho, is an expert on the project and he’d called the findings a “game-changer”. It was previously thought that the Mayan peoples were nomadic, but these cities have changed the scientific community’s understanding. Speaking to the Washington Post, Hansen said: "We now know that the Preclassic period was one of extraordinary complexity and architectural sophistication, with some of the largest buildings in world history being constructed during this time.” On top of the 110 miles of interconnected roads, the discoveries also showed evidence of organised agriculture and even hydraulic systems. The findings are the result of work which first began in 2015, which saw lidar technology uncovered signs of ancient structures below the surface. Archaeologist Enrique Hernández, from San Carlos University said about the findings: “Now there are more than 900 [settlements]… We [couldn’t] see that before. It was impossible,” he said. Beyonce bought 110 burgers in in huge Nando's spending spree in Scotland
It turns out Beyoncé is a big fan of Nando's. So much so, she splashed out almost £2,000 ($2,480) on a single order. The superstar treated her entourage before taking to the stage at Murrayfield Stadium in Scotland with a wide range of options including 50 sunset burgers, 30 fino pittas, 30 butterfly burgers, 60 chicken pittas, 20 beanie burgers and 10 chicken wings. She also ensured there were vegetarian options. While celebrities tend to go incognito when placing orders, Beyoncé used her real name. The news soon spread to Twitter, with one writing: "Beyoncé ordering £1.8k of chicken from Fountain Park Nando's is killing me." Another joked: "Beyoncé having a cheeky 2 grands worth of Nando's." Meanwhile, a third added: "Beyoncé and I. having the same Nando's order is the boost of confidence I needed today." Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Beyoncé's Edinburgh show went down a treat with fans after she thanked the audience for their energy. "I hope tonight you guys are feeling joy and love! I hope y’all feel safe tonight! I hope y’all feel free and liberated," she said. "Thank y’all so much for being such an incredible audience in this rain! I love y’all!" It comes after TikTokers were convinced the 41-year-old "threw shade" at Sweden. "How could you witness the QUEEN in person and not at minimum do a lil 2 step in your seat," one person hit back at footage that showed many concertgoers sitting down. Another added: "Sweden failed her so bad! Some of us were TRYING!" Meanwhile, many others were quick to highlight that it was simply a case of "cultural differences in concert etiquette." Janelle Monae says that they're 'much happier' when they're topless
Janelle Monáe has said that they’re “much happier” being topless after posing for a new cover shoot. The singer and actor posed for Rolling Stone’s Pride issue after appearing to explore a more sexually liberal style in 2023 with a series of album promos. Monáe, who uses they/them pronouns, announced their new album, The Age of Pleasure, with a teaser clip of the NSFW video which sees them emerging from a pool wearing a translucent skin-tight t-shirt with the word “Pleasure” written across the front. The performer's bare breasts could be seen through the wet t-shirt and Monáe says it’s all part of being a “free-ass mother****er”. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter “I’m much happier when my titties are out, and I can run around free,” Monáe told Rolling Stone. The singer also posted the new album artwork for The Age of Pleasure which sees her swimming topless underwater. Monáe described the album as their “most sensual and indulgent album yet”, saying: “Most people don’t understand what’s going on in my brain. Community has been so helpful to me; it’s beautiful that I have a title called The Age of Pleasure because it actually re-centers me. “It’s not about an album anymore. I’ve changed my whole f–king lifestyle.” The singer added: “I want things to feel so true to my life … I used to consider myself a futurist. I know what that means, to obsess about the next thing. A present tourist is what I’m calling myself right now. I’m actively focusing on being present. “This album is not about a fight,” they shared. “It’s about living in an oasis created by us for us. Even with everything going on in the world, this is our moment to breathe together, unapologetically taking this beat to enjoy — to hurry up and live.” Have your say in our news democracy. A major change is coming to WhatsApp
Big news for WhatsApp users who are a bit trigger happy when sending risky texts. You will now be able to edit your messages sent via the platform, within 15 minutes. "From correcting a simple misspelling to adding extra context to a message, we're excited to bring you more control over your chats," the messaging service said in a blog post on Monday. "All you need to do is long-press on a sent message and choose 'Edit' from the menu for up to fifteen minutes after," it added. Edited messages will be tagged as "edited", so recipients can see the message has been changed. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter But they won't be able to see how the message has been edited. It comes after Twitter said it was giving its paying subscribers the ability to edit their tweets last year. Tweets can be edited a few times in the 30 minutes after posting. "Tweeting will feel more approachable and less stressful," Twitter said in a blog post at the time. "You should be able to participate in the conversation in a way that makes sense to you and we'll keep working on ways that make it feel effortless to do just that," the platform added.
