Watch live: Pope Francis arrives in Portugal for World Youth Day festival
Watch live as Pope Francis arrives in Portugal on Wednesday, 2 August, for World Youth Day. The event was created by the late Pope John Paul for young Catholics in their teens or early 20s. It is held every two or three years in a different city and is often dubbed the "Catholic Woodstock." This year's event is the first time it has been held since 2019 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The pontiff will take part in a welcoming ceremony at Figo Maduro Air Base in Lisbon before visiting the Portuguese president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, later this morning. As part of the festival, young people will meet for Masses, vigils and other social and religious gatherings. Around 330,000 young people have registered and many more are expected to attend, the Vatican has said. Portuguese authorities have predicted more than one million attendees. Ukraine Russia news – live: Explosions and drone debris hit Kyiv in overnight attacks
Debris from drones fell in three districts of Kyiv overnight as anti-aircraft units worked to shoot down the aerial munitions, mayor Vitali Klitschko and other military officials said as air raid sirens returned in the capital, the surrounding region and most parts of the war-hit country. The residual drone had fallen in the central Solomianskyi district and a non-residential building had been damaged. Emergency services were on site, Mr Klitschko said. He added that the debris had also fallen in the Svyatoshyn district – further west – and that a tree had caught fire. Serhiy Popko, the head of Kyiv’s military administration, said debris also came down in a playground in the Holosiivskyi district, near the city centre, and set fire to a non-residential building. And, Russian drones attacked port and grain storage facilities in the south of Ukraine’s coastal Odesa region in the early hours today, setting some of them on fire, regional governor said. This comes as Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko and Russian president Vladimir Putin have taunted Poland over the presence of Wagner troops near Poland’s border.
