Ben Shapiro is fuming that Polly Pocket is 'feminist garbage' before the film has even been made
Right-wing commentator Ben Shapiro is appalled that Lena Dunham is set to direct a Polly Pocket movie after the success of Greta Gerwig's Barbie, already calling the film "feminist garbage". In a video uploaded to his YouTube channel, titled "more feminist garbage coming to a theatre near you", the 39-year-old spent the latter part of the 10-minute video complaining about the newly announced movie, after he'd spent 40 minutes (plus another 40 in two more videos) criticising the Barbie movie which has gone on to make $500 million at the global box office in a week. It was announced this week that Lena Dunham was set to direct a 'Polly Pocket' movie starring Lily Collins. Not only was Polly Pocket announced but Mattel also said that Barney, Hot Wheels, American Girl Dolls, and more were also getting the movie star treatment. "Now we are getting the Polly Pocket movie that is going to be directed by Lena Dunham, who is a trash person," Shapiro exclaims as he discusses the announcement. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Not only does Shapiro seemingly not like Dunham as a person, but he also takes issue with Dunham, who he views as an "adult director", directing a children's film. "Lena Dunham is not a director of children's film, she became famous for the extraordinarily sexually graphic HBO show Girls." More Feminist Garbage Coming to a Theater Near You www.youtube.com "Mattel execs say that there's already a great script. I doubt that because they certainly did not have a great script for Barbie." Speaking of the other movies in the works from Mattel, Shapiro bizarrely accused them all of having an agenda to push progressive ideas such as feminism, LGBT+ rights, and climate change: "I assume that American Girl will actually be turned into a feminist icon who scorns America and believes that America was founded in 1619. "Thomas and Friends will be about a gay train or something. And Barney will be about a purple dinosaur railing against global climate change which is putting his friends and family in danger because people drive cars. I can only imagine this is where they're going with this." Since Shapiro's first rant about Barbie, Gerwig has responded to some of the right-wing criticism by saying: "Certainly, there’s a lot of passion. My hope for the movie is that it’s an invitation for everybody to be part of the party and let go of the things that aren’t necessarily serving us as either women or men." Elon Musk’s Twitter bans ad showing Republican interrupting couple in bedroom
An ad launched by Progress Action Fund launched, showing an elderly Republican congressman interrupting a couple in the bedroom, has now been banned on X, formerly known as Twitter. According to the Progress Action Fund, which aims to defeat Republicans in red states, the platform “has censored” its account as well as the ad, called “Keep Republicans Out Of Your Bedroom.” In addition, the platform has “placed a ‘Search Ban’ and a ‘Search Suggestion Ban’ on the account.” As of Wednesday afternoon, the account did not show up on the social media platform, yet the ad could still be seen on X through retweets from other accounts. The Progress Action Fund said it contacted the platform’s legal department and “appealed the decision, which was denied.” Joe Jacobson, Founder and Executive Director of Progress Action Fund, took a stab at X’s owner: “Elon Musk loves free speech, but only when it’s convenient for him and his far-right political agenda.” “Political speech is protected under law and Musk’s competitors clearly agree that our ad should not be censored,” he continued. “When releasing ads in the future, we’ll be taking them to other platforms, which many others are already doing given Elon Musk’s frantic and poor leadership at Twitter.” The Independent has reached out to X for comment. The ad features a scene in which a woman asks a man if he has a condom. He reaches for the condom in a bedside table drawer, and another suit-covered arm appears, reaching for it as well. “Sorry, you can’t use those,” says an older man, clad in a black suit and red tie, while standing beside the bed. When the woman asks who he is, he replies: “I’m your Republican congressman. Now that we’re in charge, we’re banning birth control.” The ad urges voters to “vote no” on 8 August, in reference to State Issue 1, which would require proposed amendments to Ohio’s constitution “receive the approval of at least 60 per cent of eligible voters voting on the proposed amendment,” rather than a simple majority. Since acquiring Twitter, Mr Musk, a self declared “free speech absolutist”, has touted free speech as a pillar of the platform. As part of this shift during the takeover, he reinstated Donald Trump’s account after a two-year ban, which was “due to the risk of further incitement of violence” after the January 6 Capitol riot. He also reinstated at least 11 accounts belonging to prominent far-right and anti-trans influencers. On 23 November, the platform announced it “is no longer enforcing the Covid-19 misleading information policy.” As recently as April, the platform claimed to strive to “promote and protect the public conversation. We believe Twitter users have the right to express their opinions and ideas without fear of censorship.” In May, he wrote: “I am adamant about defending free speech, even if it means losing money.” Read More Democratic PAC unveils ‘steamy and horrifying’ ad with GOP lawmaker interrupting couple in bedroom Elon Musk slammed for pushing anti-vax conspiracy in response to LeBron James’ son Bronny suffering cardiac arrest Elon Musk takes control of @X account from user who had held it for 16 years Elon Musk’s Twitter bans ad showing Republican interrupting couple in bedroom 'X' logo installed atop Twitter building, spurring San Francisco to investigate permit violation EXCLUSIVE: The O.C.’s Ben McKenzie on going down the crypto rabbit hole

Meghan Markle has just demolished a Netflix streaming record
Meghan Markle has just broken an unlikely Netflix record and no, it's not because people have been watching the docuseries about her and Prince Harry again. Before she was a member of the Royal Family, Markle was an actor on the hit legal show Suits which ran on the USA Network from 2011 to 2019, with Markle appearing in 108 of the 134 episodes of the show, where she played paralegal Rachel Zane. Despite the show ending nearly four years ago, it has experienced a sudden resurgence in popularity thanks to it now being available in its entirety on Netflix. In fact, the show has become so popular on the platform that it has smashed the viewing records for an acquired show having been streamed for more than 3.1 billion minutes in a week. The previous show to hold this record was Manifest which had managed just 2.5 billion minutes in a week. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Suits was added to Netflix on June 17th, making it the first time ever the show has been available on there but it has previously been available in other countries including the United Kingdom. According to Nielsen's streaming data, this marks a 36 percent increase in viewership from the previous week. Deadline adds that Nielsen believes that this will only increase as 75 per cent of those viewing figures are from just the first three seasons of the nine season show. Markle left the show in 2017 following her engagement to Prince Harry. In a statement, the future Duchess of Sussex said: "From all of us at USA Network and Universal Cable Productions, we want to send our most heartfelt congratulations to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry on their engagement. "Meghan has been a member of our family for seven years and it has been a joy to work with her. We want to thank her for her undeniable passion and dedication to Suits, and we wish her the very best." Have your say in our news democracy.
