VAR makes a mistake as ‘significant human error’ denies Liverpool opening goal
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited has acknowledged a “significant human error” occurred during Tottenham’s 2-1 win over Liverpool after a Luis Diaz effort in the 34th-minute was incorrectly ruled out for offside. Spurs claimed a dramatic three points after Joel Matip turned Pedro Porro’s cross into his own net in the sixth minute of stoppage time to continue the hosts’ flying start under new boss Ange Postecoglou. Referee Simon Hooper sent off Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota either side of half-time, but Liverpool were left aggrieved by the first-half decision to rule out a Diaz 34th-minute effort. Mohamed Salah played Diaz through and the Colombian rifled into the bottom corner, but the offside flag was raised and a quick VAR check by Darren England at Stockley Park deemed the Liverpool attacker was offside. Still images of the incident appeared to show Cristian Romero play Diaz onside and Spurs took the lead two minutes later when Son Heung-min poked home. Cody Gakpo did level before half-time, but Matip’s last-gasp own-goal inflicted a first Premier League defeat of the season on Jurgen Klopp’s men. “PGMOL acknowledge a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool,” a PGMOL statement read. “The goal by Luis Diaz was disallowed for offside by the on-field team of match officials. “This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, however, the VAR failed to intervene. “PGMOL will conduct a full review into the circumstances which led to the error.”

Who said it - Richard Madeley or Alan Partridge?
Richard Madeley has been on our television screens in the UK since the early 80s and, at aged 66, he’s showing no signs of slowing down or having a lack of things to say that leave you gritting your teeth. The experienced broadcaster, who often pops up on Good Morning Britain as part of a rotation of presenters, has - how can we put it? - a certain way with words. Whether it’s him speaking his mind quite freely or having an apparent lack of foresight into whether his words might be offensive, Madeley has become an oddly fascinating figure in British television history. Whenever his name is trending on Twitter due to another gaffe or embarrassing quote, you’ll inevitably see him being compared to Alan Partridge - a character that often says things that are hilariously mundane, but also completely incomprehensible. Many viewers think it’s hard to tell the two men apart and, in many ways, Madeley is a better Partridge than Steve Coogan ever could be. Sign up to our new free Indy100 weekly newsletter That’s why we’ve put together a fun little quiz featuring a selection of 15 of the two men’s most bizarre, amusing and awkward quotes. All you have to do is guess whether Madeley or Partridge said them. Let’s see how you get on: 1. "Stop crying! This is supposed to make you happy! Anyway after the break, the biggest dog in the UK. And he really is big. Don’t miss it” A. Madeley B. Partridge 2. "What do you notice most that has changed during your 18 years in jail? Cars have five gears now, for example." A. Madeley B. Partridge 3. "Guide dogs for the blind? It's cruel really isn't it? Getting a dog to lead a man around all day. Not fair on either of them" A. Madeley B. Partridge 4. "Can we get some make-up please, get Keira looking like a crack whore. She'd make a good crack whore." A. Madeley B. Partridge 5. "Imagine two things you enjoy. Great individually but put them together and you get something quite special. Strawberries and cream. Egg and bacon. Yawning and scratching. Johnson and Johnson. Charles and Camilla. But what about drugs and sex? This is Chemex." A. Madeley B. Partridge 6. "I’ve gotta say, Pat, kids don’t make you happy. Some of the unhappiest times of my life have been with my kids. I remember... a holiday on the beach in Prestatyn. The kids came over to me and said, “Papa, Papa! Follow me,” and... you know... I followed them about 200 yards across the sand dunes. When I got there, finally, all they’d done was dug a big hole. Miserable." A. Madeley B. Partridge 7. "There’s not many better things than seeing an older woman skipping" A. Madeley B. Partridge 8. "An egg still in its shell, looks fine but… It‘s from the nineties" A. Madeley B. Partridge 9. "You look at the beach and you think, ‘ahh, pretty pretty, lovely golden sand, that’s safe.’ Not in certain parts of the country… quicksand!" A. Madeley B. Partridge 10. "I have to confess, as someone who is lucky enough to own more than one home, I know nothing about squatting." A. Madeley B. Partridge 11. "What is the point of salt grinders? 30 plus years of grand delusion. We must be mad!" A. Madeley B. Partridge 12. "I've never met a single woman happy with the way she looks, except Jordan - but I've never met her." A. Madeley B. Partridge 13. "I would've taken it off sooner, but I was having a fascinating conversation with the proud father of Norfolk's most sun-tanned child" A. Madeley B. Partridge 14. "Obviously, we had the Nuremberg trials after the war and we hanged quite a few Nazis and imprisoned a lot of others and we let them out eventually. But we didn’t go after the Hitler Youth as far as I’m aware. We didn’t go after the Hitler Youth – we only went after adults who served in the Hitler regime. And that’s something to reflect on, I think.” A. Madeley B. Partridge 15. "There are more proven facts in my book than in the Bible. People call the Bible the good book but my book is really good" A. Madeley B. Partridge How’d you get on? Check your answers below and feel free to let us know your score. Answers: 1. Madeley 2. Madeley 3. Partridge 4. Madeley 5. Partridge 6. Partridge 7. Madeley 8. Trump news – latest: Trump defiant at post-indictment speeches as Florida judge he appointed set to keep case
Former president Donald Trump spoke at two Republican state conventions on Saturday in Georgia and North Carolina, just one day after he was indicted for keeping highly-classified information at his Florida home, Mar-a-Lago. The 49-page, 38-count indictment was unsealed on Friday after Mr Trump released a series of social media posts revealing that he has been indicted by a grand jury under the supervision of Special Counsel Jack Smith. The indictment details the charges against Mr Trump and Walt Nauta, a former US Navy noncommissioned officer who left government service to work for Mr Trump after his term ended in January 2021. The former president has fumed online about the charges and lashed out at Mr Smith calling him a “deranged lunatic”. The special counsel for his part gave a brief explanation of the sweeping indictment and reiterated that in America, the law applies to everyone. Mr Trump repeated his attacks on Mr Smith onstage in Georgia before flying up to his second event. On the flight, he told Politico he would not quit the 2024 primary race even if convicted. Did Harry Styles shave his head for a role in The White Lotus?
Harry Styles shocked fans when he ditched his signature locks and shaved his head - but now rumours are flying that there is particular reason the popstar is sporting the buzzcut look. Upon photos of Styles at a U2 gig in Las Vegas looking rather different getting shared, the internet reacted with memes, a Taylor Swift conspiracy theory, and at one point the pop star's mum intervened questioning what all the fuss was about. The latest rumour that has garnered attention is the theory that Styles shaved his head because he's going to star in season three of The White Lotus. Jennifer Coolidge, Aubrey Plaza, Theo James, and Sydney Sweeney are just some of the A-list actors who have starred in the show, the first season aired in 2021, followed by season two in 2022. It has been confirmed the Emmy Award-winning series will return for a third season, but it may not be released until 2025 due to strikes, HBO and Max chairman/CEO Casey Bloys said, as per Variety. While the show's creator Mike White has said he hopes to start filming “at the beginning of the year.” Some of the new characters written for the upcoming series include "a patriarch, a corporate executive, an actress, a couple of mothers, a misfit and a yogi," according to Deadline, we also already know the season will focus on exploring “death in Eastern religion and spirituality," as White confirmed last year. These details have led Styles fans to believe that the singer and actor shaved his head in preparation to play one of these roles. Plus, this rumour was further fuelled when anonymous celebrity gossip account DeuxMoi claimed that an "A-list singer" was "circling a part" - with the singer tipped to play the reported "yogi". Australian radio star Leon Sjogren also speculated this theory that we'll see Styles in the new season. This wouldn't be the first acting role for Styles, as he has previously starred in Dunkirk (2017), Don't Worry Darling (2022), and My Policeman (2022) as well as a post-credits sequence in the Marvel film Eternals (2021). It's been quite the year for the As It Was singer too, after he won Album of the Year for Harry's House at the Grammy Awards, and completed his last leg of Love on Tour - so as he's not touring fans noted how he has some free time on his hands to pursue a role like the one that is rumoured. However, Styles has since responded to the rumours that he'll be joining the new season of The White Lotus, as HuffPost UK reported that his team confirmed that Styles won't be starring in the show. While fans will be disappointed, they'll no doubt be watching in anticipation to see what Styles does next.
