Ship captain brilliantly shuts down 'sexist' who questioned how a woman could do her job
What’s the best way to deal with ignorance? Get angry? Ignore it? Try and educate someone? Well, here’s a lesson in elegantly dispatching trolls, courtesy of Captain Kate McCue. McCue is a cruise ship captain with big social media followings on Instagram and TikTok. She’s the first American woman to captain a giant cruise vessel. But that hasn’t stopped people from sending her ignorant comments. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Like the anonymous troll who recently replied to McCue’s content by asking: "How can you be a captain? Your [sic] only a woman." McCue decided, for once, to dignify them with a response – with a twist. In a video posted to her TikTok she said: @captainkatemccue Reply to @seamus272 #yourewelcome #fyp #foryou #captain "Normally as I’m scrolling through comments and I see something like this, I totally ignore and move on with my life. But I think it’s about high time I address this because it’s 2020. And in this day and age, I am shocked that someone still doesn’t know the difference between ‘your’ and ‘you’re’. "A quick reference: ‘you’re’ as in ‘you are’, like ‘you are sexist’. ‘Your’ is something possessive, because it belongs to you, like ‘your ignorance’. But don’t worry, I’m here for you. If you need any more clarification, you can find me here. In my captain’s chair." The clip ends with a shot of McCue reclining in her captain’s seat. And the smart takedown is being praised by many. “Brilliant,” one viewer said, adding that they “did not expect” the way McCue cleverly chose to dissect the ignorance on display. Grammar lessons and dispatching trolls in under one minute? Now that’s a skill. Have your say in our news democracy. Neymar's father gives odd response after footballer admits 'mistake' to his girlfriend
The father of Brazilian footballer Neymar had an odd response after his son was deemed to be admitting to cheating on his pregnant girlfriend, Bruna Biancardi. In a bizarre and lengthy public apology to Biancardi posted on his Instagram, the Paris Saint-Germain star admitted he “made a mistake”. Neymar admitted he has “done wrong” and claimed he will “try” to make their relationship work after the couple revealed in April they are expecting a baby. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Translated from Portuguese into English, Neymar wrote: “Bru. I do this for both of you and your family. Justify the unjustifiable. No need to. But I need you in OUR lives “I saw how much you were exposed, how much you suffered with all of this and how much you want to be by my side. And I stand beside you. “I did wrong with you all. I risk saying I'm wrong every day, on and off the pitch. Only I solve my mistakes in personal life at home, in my intimacy with my family and friends…” He continued: “Bru, I already apologised for my mistakes, for unnecessary exposure, but I feel obligated to come publicly reaffirm that. If a private matter has become public, the apology has to be public. “Can't imagine without you. I don't know if we'll work out, but TODAY you're sure I want to try. “Our purpose will prevail, our love for our baby will win, our love for each other will make us stronger.” The post received over 10 million likes, while some limited accounts were also allowed to comment on the post. Neymar’s father left a rather odd response to his son’s apparent infidelity, writing (translated): “That's it son... life always keeps on teaching us. Congratulations.” One person on Twitter argued: “Seems like the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” Have your say in our news democracy.
