Spoilers for ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 3 Episode 10

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The most interesting and attention-detail character on ‘Ted Lasso’ is Nate, who was depicted as timid and insecure in Season 1. However, with the show’s progress, Ted Lasso notices Nate’s (Nick Mohammed) talents and encourages him to embrace his potential. Subsequently, he becomes an integral part of the team and is given more room for responsibilities. But that didn’t last long, after Nate was offered a manager job at West Ham by Rupert Mannion.

‘Ted Lasso’ Season 3 Episode 10 breaks the heart of many of Nate’s fans as his dream is over. The ‘Wonder Kid’ is revealed to have abruptly left his dream job at West Ham as a manager as a result of unexpected events that happened off-screen. Though the whole episode was wholesome, it left everybody to wonder what really happened, especially when Rebecca asks her ex-husband Rupert about Nate, he says, “Some people just aren’t ready when they get their shot”.

Why did Nate leave West Ham?

The best part of the entire series is Nate’s arc as an antagonist to Ted Lasso. He has had an incredible journey and growth throughout the show, both as a coach and as a person. He started as a kit man for AFC Richmond and was constantly bullied due to a lack of confidence. However, when Ted came into the picture, the bullying ended, and he was given more responsibilities. Well, to be honest, he was kind of an inspiration to people who lacks confidence and never present their real talents out in the world.

As Nate achieves his potential and progress in terms of personal growth, it was heartbreaking to watch his heel turn at the end of Season 2. After everything Ted has done for him, he left AFC Richmond. Perhaps, Nate did learn about self-respect and wanted to become something of his own without being under the shadows of someone else. As a result, he accepted the job offer as a manager of West Ham, one of the top clubs in the Premier League. For him, this was the perfect opportunity to answer back to those who bullied him at AFC Richmond.

Despite everything, the big surprise is the fact that he was able to understand and acknowledge that West Ham isn’t the right place for him. Though he was treated with respect, he was the same old Nate who likes the same restaurants, has the same habits, and does nothing fancy. Apparently, Rupert wanted Nate to become the worst version of himself, not the best, and Nate understood that.

Why ‘Ted Lasso’ didn’t show the moment Nate left West Ham?

Nate’s character arc highlights themes of self-discovery, personal growth, and representation of how individuals can evolve. Nate, from being a person who took everyone’s s***t to stand up to Rupert and quitting his job, is a huge deal. But why didn’t we get to see that moment? Well, we did see him stand up to Ted when he quit AFC Richmond at the end of Season 2, then why not stand up to Rupert? It’d have actually been super satisfying, as we’re perceiving the beginning of Nate’s redemption arc, and his quitting was important to that.

Moreover, ‘Ted Lasso’ prioritize respect, so when it does a mic drop, it's not about satisfaction but respect. The important part here is not what speech did Nate give or if he yelled, “I quit!” to Rupert, it’s about how he did leave. There is respect. How he changed as a person, who now knows the value of self-respect and being a good person, is extensively shown in Season 3, Episode 10. After he quit his job, he secretly goes to his parent's house to get some peace without paparazzi or reporters trying to get his attention.

'Ted Lasso' Season 3 is streaming on Apple TV.
