NORTH PORT, FLORIDA: Police are currently investigating the death of Daylan Guillen, six, on whether a person will face charges in his death. The family of the six-year-old boy who was mauled to death by a pit bull mix is requesting that their dog be euthanized.
According to North Port, Florida police, the young boy was attacked on July 4 last and was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital where he died "as a result of the severe injuries sustained" in his upper torso. "Our hearts are broken for this young child and his family. As a father and pet owner, I know this is one of the worst tragedies you can imagine," stated North Port Police Chief Todd Garrison, according to People.
Who was Daylan Guillen?
Daylan who was a bat boy for his older brother's baseball team also played little league baseball, according to a GoFundMe page. and was also a bat boy for his older brother’s team, according to a GoFundMe helping cover the family’s funeral expenses.
“He was such an amazing son and an even better brother. He had a huge love for dinosaurs. He loved to help out with anything,” read the fundraiser set up to help the family cover the funeral's expenses. Guillen "wanted to help out around the house so this week he was learning how to use the vacuum to help with house duties," the page added.
Following his death, Guillen's youth baseball league paid tribute to the young player. "He was just a really sweet, happy-go-lucky kid. [He] loved to play baseball. Didn’t care if he ran out on the field with the big kids or little kids," said Nicole O’Brien, a secretary for the North Port Area Little League. According to the GoFundMe page, Guillen "was an organ donor so they were able to save his kidneys and they will be donated to two other little kids in need."
Police continue investigating as dog showed no signs of aggression
A spokesperson told the outlet that the dog was a family pet and the North Port Police Department stated that prior to the tragic attack, there were no reported incidents about the dog. The six-year-old's family has requested the three-year-old pit bull mix be put down.
The dog is currently being held in quarantine for 10 days by Sarasota County Animal Services before it is euthanized. According to the police, the family claimed the pet dog had never shown signs of aggression in the past which has now led the police to investigate whether someone will be charged in Guillen's death.
