MARYLAND, UNITED STATES: Marking a significant milestone, the US Navy has witnessed its first woman take on a leadership role.
Navy Admiral Lisa Franchetti has taken on the position of chief, albeit in an "acting capacity," despite another nominee being put forth by Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.
Admiral Franchetti takes over from the retired Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Mike Gilday, per Daily Mail. Her status as acting chief is pending Senate confirmation following her nomination by President Joe Biden.
After a successful confirmation, Admiral Franchetti will etch her name in history as the inaugural woman to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Admiral Franchetti is a native of Rochester, New York. She became a commissioned officer through Northwestern University's Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Program in 1985.
She holds a master's degree in organizational management from the University of Phoenix.
Throughout her career at sea, Admiral Franchetti held various roles, including commanding USS Ross (DDG 71) and DESRON-21, according to the Navy.
