The Friend Zone: Phillies second base streak ends in shame

The Philadelphia Phillies felt the keen sting of The Friend Zone as they couldn't get to second base on May 30 against the Mets, shamefully ending a streak.

Ranger Suarez and the Philadelphia Phillies bullpen delivered a game that was good enough to beat the rival Mets on Tuesday night at Citi Field, giving up just six hits, three walks and two runs on the night. All they needed was a little help from the offense to bring some guys across home plate to get the win.

They couldn't do that. And forget about home plate, the Phillies couldn't even get to second base, the lament of many a young person getting friend zoned on a date.

Philadelphia only got on base three times in the May 30 game against their NL East rivals, managing just two hits and a walk. Both of the hits were singles and none of the three baserunners advanced after getting on. And that was a bit of unfortunate history as it was the first time since July 2016 that the Phillies were unable to reach second base in a game.

The last time that happened, as you can see on the graphic, was also against the Mets.

Phillies fail to reach second base in a game for first time in nearly 7 years

It's one thing for a streak like that for something that appears so simple for professional baseball players to do to finally come to an end — it's another matter entirely when the last two times it's happened has been against one of the club's biggest rivals and, in the latest instance, is in the middle of a highly disappointing season for the Phillies.

With the 2-0 loss to the Mets and nobody getting past the first bag on the night, Philadelphia now drops to just 25-28 on the season, sitting at fourth in the division standings.

This also isn't the first time that the offense has been an issue. The Phillies currently rank tied for 22nd in baseball in runs scored (227). What's interesting, though, is that they are middle of the pack at 16th in team OBP, meaning that they are getting on base fine, but it's advancing those runners that has been an issue more often than not.

For a team that made the World Series last year, added Trea Turner among others this offseason to make that type of run again, and is now doing this, things might start getting ugly soon in the City of Love You Like a Brother Brotherly Love.
