Most goals in a Bundesliga season: 1. Robert Lewandowski — 2020-21 — 41 goals
In 2020 Robert Lewandowski was named The Best FIFA Men's Player of the Year. He would have also likely been named the Ballon d'Or winner as well if it had not been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the 2020/21 season, the Polish forward was in remarkable form. He scored 41 times in just 29 Bundesliga matches for Bayern Munich that campaign. This included scoring four against Hertha Berlin and four hat-tricks which came against Eintracht Frankfurt, Borussia Dortmund, Stuttgart and Borussia Monchengladbach.
Bayern won the Bundesliga, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and the DFL-Supercup during that season.
2. Gerd Muller — 1971-72 — 40 goals
Gerd Muller of Bayern Munich held the record for Bundesliga goals before Robert Lewandowski broke it nearly 50 years later.
Muller's 1971-72 season saw him score 40 goals in 24 league games. This included five against Rot-Weib Oberhausen, four against Borussia Dortmund and four hat-tricks which came against Hamburger SV, VFL Bochum, Werder Bremen and Eintracht Frankfurt.
Bayern won the Bundesliga that campaign and Muller would go on to win the European Championship with West Germany that year. Muller was the top goalscorer at that tournament too with four goals.
3. Gerd Muller — 1969-70 — 38 goals
Gerd Muller also set a record during the 1969-70 season with 38 goals in 33 Bundesliga games for Bayern Munich. His campaign included him scoring four against Werder Bremen and Rot-Weib Oberhausen. He also scored hat-tricks against Rot-Weiss Essen and Borussia Dortmund.
Despite Muller's goalscoring form that season, it was Borussia Monchengladbach that won the Bundesliga but he would win the Ballon d'Or in 1970.
4. Gerd Muller — 1972-73 — 36 goals
Gerd Muller appears on this list for the third time as he scored 36 goals in 33 Bundesliga matches for Bayern Munich during the 1972-73 season.
This included Muller scoring five against 1. FC Kaiserslautern, four against Hannover 96 and a hat-trick against Rot-Weib Oberhausen.
Bayern would win the Bundesliga that campaign. Muller would go on to play 611 times for the club and score 568 times, which makes him their top goalscorer of all time.
5. Robert Lewandowski — 2021-22 — 35 goals
Robert Lewandowski scored 35 goals in 34 Bundesliga matches for Bayern Munich the season after he had broken Gerd Muller's record.
Lewandowski's campaign included hat-tricks against Hertha Berlin and FC Koln. Bayern would win the Bundesliga that season but it was to be the Polish forward's last with the club as he would depart for Barcelona that summer.
6. Dieter Muller — 1976-77 — 34 goals
Dieter Muller is the first non-Bayern Munich player in these slides, as he scored 34 goals in 34 games for FC Koln during the 1976-77 season.
The German scored four against Tennis Borussia Berlin and VFL Bochum, whilst also registering hat-tricks against Hamburger SV and Karlsruher SC that campaign.
Koln finished fifth in the league that season but they did win the DFB-Pokal. Muller was top goalscorer at the 1976 European Championship. However, West Germany lost to Czechoslovakia in the final of that tournament.
7. Robert Lewandowski — 2019-20 — 34 goals
The 2019-20 season was a historic one for Robert Lewandowski and Bayern Munich as they won the treble by winning the Champions League, Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal.
Lewandowski contributed by scoring 34 goals in 31 league games, which included a hat-trick against Schalke 04.
8. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang — 2016-17 — 31 goals
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored 31 goals in 32 Bundesliga matches for Borussia Dortmund during the 2016-17 season. This form helped earn the forward a move to Premier League side Arsenal.
During his prolific campaign, Aubameyang netted four against Hamburger SV. Dortmund finished the season in third place, only behind Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig.
9. Lothar Emmerich — 1965-66 — 31 goals
Back in the 1965-66 season, Lothar Emmerich scored an impressive 31 goals in 34 Bundesliga matches for Borussia Dortmund. These included two hat-tricks against Borussia Monchengladbach and one against Hannover 96.
Dortmund finished second that season to 1860 Munich. Emmerich did earn himself on the West Germany roster for the 1966 World Cup in England. He scored once against Spain and played in the final where they lost to the host nation.
10. Uwe Seeler — 1963-64 — 30 goals
Uwe Seeler scored 30 goals in 30 Bundesliga matches for Hamburger SV during the 1963-64 season. This included hat-tricks against 1860 Munich, Preuben Munster and 1.FC Kaiserslautern.
Hamburg finished the season in sixth place and Seeler went on to become a club legend by making 582 appearances for the club and scoring 496 goals.
11. Robert Lewandowski — 2016-17 — 30 goals
Robert Lewandowski missed out on being the top goalscorer during the 2016-17 Bundesliga season as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored just one more than him. However, the Polish striker's record of 30 goals in 33 league matches for Bayern Munich is still very impressive.
Lewandowski's campaign included hat-tricks against Werder Bremen, Hamburger SV and FC Augsburg. Bayern would again claim the Bundesliga that season.
12. Robert Lewandowski — 2015-16 — 30 goals
Robert Lewandowski again netter 30 goals the season before for Bayern Munich as they secured the Bundesliga title. His campaign included him scoring five goals against Wolfsburg.
Lewandowski would play for Poland at Euro 2016 but would score just one goal which came in their quarter-final defeat to the eventual winners Portugal.
13. Robert Lewandowski — 2017-18 — 29 goals
Robert Lewandowski again with 29 goals in 30 games for Bayern Munich during the 2017/18 season. During this campaign he scored two hat-tricks which came against his former club Borussia Dortmund and Hamburger SV. Bayern would again win the league that year.
Following this season was the 2018 World Cup in Russia. However, Lewandowski failed to score as Poland were eliminated in the group stage.
14. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar — 2011-12 — 29 goals
The first Schalke 04 player to feature on this list is Klaas-Jan Hunterlaar who found the back of the net 29 times in 32 Bundesliga matches during the 2011-12 season. This included a hat-trick against FC Koln.
Schalke finished the season in third place which qualified them for the Champions League. Huntelaar would leave the club for Ajax but would return to Schalke in 2021. However, he was not able to save them from relegation that year.
15. Andre Silva — 2020-21 — 28 goals
Andre Silva scored 28 goals in 32 Bundesliga matches for Eintracht Frankfurt during the 2020/21 season. His contribution helped the club finish fifth in the league and qualify them for the Europa League.
Silva's form earned him a move to RB Leipzig. However, he was never as prolific there as he was with Frankfurt. The Portugese forward is now playing in La Liga for Real Sociedad.
