Tennessee football rumors: Mike Matthews not the end of 5-star commits?

The Tennessee Volunteers secured the commitment of five-star recruit Mike Matthews. Is there another five-star recruit arriving in Knoxville?

The Tennessee Volunteers are coming off their most successful season in quite some time. Finishing 11-2 on the season, including an Orange Bowl victory over Clemson, the Volunteers are now building toward the future, and they're doing a great job at it.

This past week, the Volunteers successfully secured the commitment of five-star wide receiver Mike Matthews. Tennessee managed to beat other big schools like USC, Alabama, Clemson, and Georgia to ensure they got the 13th-ranked prospect in the entire nation (247 Sports).

Are the Volunteers done adding to their 2024 recruiting class?

Well, Tennessee is one of the top contenders to land five-star wide receiver Ryan Wingo out of St. Louis University. But, they will have to wait for Wingo's official answer on Dec. 20 during the early signing period.

Tennessee could add another five-star wide receiver in Ryan Wingo

Wingo is ranked by 247Sports No. 7 wide receiver in the 2024 class. Considering that, a lot of top teams are in on Wingo, including Texas, Georgia, Michigan, and Alabama. 247Sports director of football recruiting Steve Wiltfong gave his crystal ball prediction that Wingo would end up committing to play for the Texas Longhorns.

The wide receiver stands at 6-foot-2 and weighs 205 pounds. This past season for St. Louis, Wingo recorded 32 receptions for 636 yards and nine touchdowns, while rushing for 214 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries, per MaxPreps.

Thus far, Tennessee recruited one five-star recruit (Matthews), 12 four-star recruits, and five three-star recruits, giving them a No. 8 overall ranking by 247Sports.

The Volunteers will be looking to have an even better 2023 campaign, even while no longer having quarterback Hendon Hooker, offensive tackle Darnell Wright, defensive end Byron Young, and wide receivers Jalin Hyatt and Cedric Tillman. The hope is that head coach Josh Heupel can lead the program to its first national championship since 1998. Whenever that happens, the program is ensuring that that becomes a reality soon, as evidenced by their additions in the 2024 class.

Now, they wait to see if Wingo will commit to joining them.
