OpenAI Delays The Launch Of Its GPT Store

Fresh off a few weeks of musical CEOs, OpenAI has decided to delay the launch of its GPT store until early next year, Axios reports. The store was originally expected to open last month.

In a statement, OpenAI said, “While we had expected to release it this month, a few unexpected things have been keeping us busy!“ No kidding.

Once the store launches, developers will be able to distribute their own GPTs widely through the store. OpenAI has also indicated it plans to offer popular GPT creators a share of the revenue it gets from ChatGPT Plus subscriptions; however, the company has yet to share details on how that might work. Enterprise users will also be able to create GPTs just for use within their company. For now, individuals can still share custom GPTs via a link.

Custom GPTs were announced in November at DevDay, OpenAI’s first-ever developer conference. At the same time, the company also announced that ChatGPT has reached 100 million weekly users.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stepped down from his position as CEO at the company in November, over the next few days Altman was rumored to be starting a new company, took a position at Microsoft, and then managed to return to OpenAI once again as its CEO just 5 days after his initial departure.

The board's issues with Altman stem in part from the launch of the GPT Store. The board reportedly wanted the company to keep its nonprofit roots and thought that the developer day and announcement of the store was too much too fast.

Microsoft has currently invested over $13 billion in ChatGPT.
