MLS transfer roundup: Revs strengthen midfield, Austin FC and Rapids make loan moves

Several Major League Soccer clubs are busy at work ahead of the league's Secondary Transfer Window that opens on July 5 and shuts on August 2.

Austin FC and Colorado Rapids have sent players out on loan in the West, while the Revs add to their already solid roster with a midfielder on a free transfer. The Eastern Conference team are gearing up for a strong postseason run with the added depth in the middle of the park.

Here's the latest MLS transfers you may have missed...

1. Moussa Djitte joins Bandirmaspor on loan from Austin FC

It will be the second loan spell for Moussa Djitte as he joins Bandirmaspor in the Turkish second division until the end of the 2023/24 campaign. He was previously in France with Ligue 1 side AC Ajaccio as they were unable to avoid relegation.

The 23-year-old forward has scored five goals in 30 appearances for the Verde and Black, and the loan move signals they believe he can further his development for the future.

Gyasi Zardes and Maxi Urruti will shoulder goal-scoring duties unless Austin choose to bring in another forward for the 2024 season.

2. Colorado Rapids sign Daniel Chaco

Colorado Rapids announced the signing of Daniel Chacon from their Rapids II squad after he originally joined from Costa Rican side Cartagines last summer. The Western Conference team have decided to further his development by sending him back on loan back to his native country with Alajuelense for the rest of the 2023 campaign.

The 22-year-old defender has experience at the international level with Costa Rica as he appeared at the 2022 World Cup.

"We’re pleased to secure Danny’s long-term future with the club," said club president Pádraig Smith. "At his young age, Danny has already featured in a World Cup and is quickly carving a place for himself with Costa Rica’s national team."

"His signing underscores how our MLS NEXT Pro side can serve as an important platform to bring in talent with the potential to break into the first team."

"We look forward to seeing his continued development as he briefly returns to Costa Rica with Alajuelense for their coming Apertura season."

3. New England Revolution sign Ian Harkes on free transfer

New England Revolution have added to their midfield ranks with the signing of Ian Harkes, who joins on a free transfer. The 28-year-old was most recently with Dundee United in Scotland.

This isn't the first go-around for Harkes in MLS, though. The midfielder began his playing career as a homegrown player for DC United in 2017 upon arriving from Wake Forest University.

In 2016, Harkes was the recipient of the MAC Hermann Trophy, which is awarded to the best soccer player in the country.
