Mets woes worsen with Pete Alonso IL stint

The Mets will have to find a way to bounce back without Pete Alonso in the lineup. The first baseman is heading for the IL for several weeks.

It's a tough time to be a Mets fan.

New York just suffered an embarrassing sweep by the Atlanta Braves, conceding a three-run lead in each of the three losses. Thursday night's loss despite a 10-7 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning felt like a new low.

Then Friday brought the news that first baseman Pete Alonso has a bone bruise and a sprained left wrist. He's heading for the 10-day IL but is expected to miss "approximately 3-4 weeks" with the injury.

In addition to placing Alonso on IL, retroactive to June 8, the Mets also announced a few other personnel moves: Infielder Luis Guillorme and left-hander Zach Muckenhirm were recalled while righty Stephan Nogosek was designated for assignment and catcher Tomás Nido was outrighted. Guillorme's call up will give New York some more infield depth to work with.

Alonso was hit by a pitch square on the wrist on Wednesday. He had to leave the game and was initially termed day-to-day by the team.

Further testing revealed the extent of the damage to Alonso's wrist, which turned out to be bat news for New York.

On Thursday, the Mets turned to Mark Vientos at first base. The 23-year-old prospect is a third-baseman by trade but he could help fill the gap left by Alonso.

Mark Canha, who stepped in as a pinch runner or Vientos on Thursday, started his career playing first base for the A's, so he's a more veteran option to try. Eduardo Esccobar played some first base for the Brewers in 2021.
