Manchester United are expected to assess left-back Sergio Reguilon before the weekend clash with Brentford, seemingly desperate to get a specialist back in the problem position.

Reguilon arrived on loan from Tottenham at the end of the summer transfer window as emergency cover following injuries to Luke Shaw and understudy Tyrell Malacia.

But the Spaniard, having impressed against Bayern Munich and Burnley, suffered a hamstring problem of his own against the latter and hasn't featured since.

Reguilon has missed the last three games against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup and Premier League, and Galatasaray in the Champions League. Sofyan Amrabat, signed on deadline to boost the spine of the team in midfield, has been forced to fill in and was exposed by the latter this week.

Diogo Dalot has previously covered on the left when needed, but with Aaron Wan-Bissaka also nursing an injury, the Portuguese is currently the only option at right-back. Victor Lindelof has been known to cover at right-back in the past, but with centre-back Lisandro Martinez going down too, he is needed in the middle. To say it is a dire situation for Erik ten Hag is an understatement.

The Manchester Evening News has reported that United will assess the risk of bringing Reguilon back into the team against Brentford on Saturday, the final game before the October international break.

Reguilon was not involved when the team last trained together on Monday but has been partaking in individual work on the grass in a bid to recover his fitness.

United have kept just three clean sheets in 10 games across all competitions so far this season and have leaked seven goals alone in two Champions League outings that has put them bottom of the group and with a mountain to climb if they are to reach the knockout rounds.
