Liverpool learn fate of Curtis Jones red card appeal

Liverpool have confirmed that their appeal to overturn Curtis Jones' red card in the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur was unsuccessful.

Jones was sent off in the first half of Liverpool's eventual, extremely controversial, 2-1 defeat at the hands of Tottenham on Saturday. Following a VAR check, Jones' reckless challenge which contorted the bottom of Yves Bissouma's leg to near breaking point was deemed worthy of a red card by referee Simon Hooper.

Despite the rashness of the challenge from Jones, Liverpool confirmed on Monday that they had launched an appeal to have the straight red card and three-game ban which it resulted in rescinded.

However, the club have now released a statement confirming that said appeal has been unsuccessful and that Jones will serve a three-game ban:

"Curtis Jones is set to serve a three-match Premier League suspension after an appeal to overturn the red card he received at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday was unsuccessful.

"The midfielder was initially shown a yellow card for a challenge on Yves Bissouma in the 26th minute of the fixture at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

"However, that was upgraded to a straight red following VAR intervention.

"Jones will now not be eligible for the Reds’ encounters with Brighton & Hove Albion, Everton and Nottingham Forest this month."

Jones' red card was one of two dished out to Liverpool players during the defeat, as substitute Diogo Jota also received his marching order following two bookable offences. In their statement, Liverpool confirmed that the forward will serve his one-match ban this weekend when the Reds are due to play Brighton.

"Diogo Jota will also serve a one-match suspension following his sending off for two yellow cards," the club confirmed, "ruling him out of Sunday’s trip to the American Express Community Stadium."

While both players are unavailable for domestic action, they will be able to play a part in Liverpool's upcoming Europa League clash with Union Saint-Gilloise on Thursday evening.
