LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Critics are seemingly not happy with Lily-Rose Depp’s ‘The Idol’ and the raunchiness it presents, but Johnny Depp is reportedly happy with his daughter’s bold performance. The 24-year-old actress has been portraying the character of an aspiring pop star in the HBO series, which premiered on June 4. The series also features The Weeknd as ‘Tedros’ and has gained a lot of notoriety because of its numerous explicit scenes.
But Lily-Rose’s famous father, Johnny Depp, has apparently no issues as an insider told Daily Mail, “Johnny loves that Lily is carving out a career of her own and challenging herself to take on roles that interest her and test her. He loves that she is her own person and becoming her own actress. She isn't resting her career on his success.”
‘He loves that she is such a strong person’
The tipster continued, “He loves that she is such a strong person, especially now that she has gotten some extra attention with her recent role in 'The Idol'. He is proud of her and not lending anything to the extra chatter and drama that the role brings.” They added, “He believes that she must be doing something right since the role is getting so much attention, and he is proud of her success.” However, no direct comment has come yet from the A-lister or from his reps. This comes as earlier The Hollywood Reporter severely criticized ‘The Idol’ even before it aired. Referring to the two episodes that were shown at Cannes, Lovia Gyarkye labeled the show as “More Regressive Than Transgressive.”
The Arts and Culture Critic went on to write, “Instead of subtly skewering the misogynistic and predatory nature of the business, The Idol became a forbidden love story — the stuff of a toxic man’s fantasy.” She also added, “Rarely does a scene go by without the camera showing flashes of her [Lily-Rose] breasts or a**. You start to wonder if this is building to anything, and by episode two it seems likely that it’s probably not.”
‘I was guilty until proven innocent’
Meanwhile, on the work front for Johhny, the 59-year-old got a seven-minute standing ovation at the 76th edition of Cannes for his movie, ‘Jeanne du Barry’, which is in French. More recently, speculations began to float that he may do a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean' movie again after being fired from the series over Amber Heard’s domestic violence accusations.
However, no official statement has been released either by Disney or Depp. The star, however, took down the entertainment firm while fighting the court battle against Heard in 2022. He reportedly added, “Having added much of myself, much of my own rewriting, the dialogue, the scenes, the jokes, I didn't quite understand how after that long relationship and quite a successful relationship with Disney that... suddenly I was guilty until proven innocent.”
