John Sterling plunked by foul ball during Yankees-Red Sox game

John Sterling, the radio voice of the New York Yankees, was hit by a foul ball during Saturday's game against the Red Sox.

John Sterling will not be headed for the injured list, per the legendary 84-year-old Yankees radio voice himself, despite being plunked with a foul ball in the middle of his broadcast of Yankees vs Red Sox on Saturday afternoon. Sterling is expected to be in the booth for Sunday's matchup as well.

The timing of Sterling's incident was all the more incredible. 3-2 count, two outs, tying run at the plate for the Boston Red Sox. Sterling's Yankees were trying to close out an all-important win against their biggest nemesis. Suddenly, all we could hear was panic over the airwaves.

Emmanuel Berbari, who is WFAN's postgame show host, ran and got Sterling bandages in the aftermath.

"He not only called the next pitch," Berbari said, per The Athletic. "He gave the classic oomph on the final call as well. It was an awesome performance."

Sterling did admit there was some blood involved, but that's just the toughness necessary to be a Yanks broadcaster.

Yankees: John Sterling calls final out of win over Red Sox

With the win, New York remains in third place in the crowded AL East. While the Tampa Bay Rays are running away with the division, the Baltimore Orioles and Yankees are in prime position to steal both of the AL Wild Card spots, meaning three AL East teams will make the postseason.

Tampa Bay has the best record in all of baseball, and they have shown no sign of slowing down. New York, a solid 10 games over the .500 mark, is a postseason threat and perhaps just a few pieces away from really rounding into form. Some of that will come from top players returning from injury, such as Aaron Judge and Carlos Rodon.

However, expect the Yankees to be active around the MLB Trade Deadline.
