LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Cobie Smulders readies Marvel fans for Phase 5 with the premiere of 'Secret Invasion' in June 2023. The upcoming Disney+ show marks the ninth television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The series centers around Nick Fury, portrayed by Samuel L Jackson, as he discovers a faction of Skrulls that have infiltrated Earth. Fury, along with his allies, races against time to thwart the advancing aliens. Skrulls were previously introduced in the 2019 film Captain Marvel, as reported by People.

'This series has a much darker tone'
When discussing what fans can anticipate from 'Secret Invasion,' the 'How I Met Your Mother' alum shared with the outlet, "This series has a much darker tone compared to previous ones. It's hard to know who to trust." "'Secret Invasion' provides us with insights into the lives of agents striving to safeguard Earth and its inhabitants," she added.
"Now, there is a significant revelation regarding the Skrulls. Maria has been trying to bring Nick Fury back to Earth to assist with numerous issues, but it's only when the Skrulls become public knowledge that she finally grabs his attention," said the 41-year-old actress. However, she also added that "with Marvel creating content for the streaming platform, we have the opportunity to spend more time with the characters, delve into their backstories, and deepen their relationships."
'An absolute dream to play Maria Hill for the last 10 years'
Smulders will be returning to her decade-long MCU character Agent Maria Hill through this new series. "It's been an absolute dream to play Maria Hill for the last 10 years. She is a fantastic, multi-layered character who has triumphed over some intense moments in Marvel history," she said.
"The last time we saw Maria Hill on screen in 'Spider-Man: Far From Home,' it was revealed in the end that she was a Skrull," Smulder pointed out and added, "So the audience is in the dark as to what she has been up to," she continues. "I'd like to think that she's been sipping Mai Tais on vacation somewhere after coming back from the Blip but most likely, she has been working on a mountain of backlogged issues."
The first six episode of 'Secret Invasion,' is set to premiere on June 21, 2023. The series also features Emilia Clarke, Don Cheadle, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ben Mendelsohn, and Martin Freeman.
