MrBeast's best friend, Chris Tyson, spoke candidly about a terrible period in his youth that forced him ‘back into the closet’ after he had worked so hard to come out of it. Together with his buddy and fellow team member Karl Jacobs, Chris participated in an interview for the YouTube channel Banter. The two engaged the hosts in a discussion on Chris's gender transition. During this discussion, Chris' horrific childhood tale was made known.
When Chris was younger, he enjoyed the concept of dressing up in his sister's clothes and even wore makeup. He believed, at the time, that this was only a childish phase. However, as time went on, he realized that it wasn't "just a phase." Therefore, when he was 14 years old, he attempted to find friends online with whom he might be able to communicate, and who would be sympathetic to his plight.
‘Back into the closet’
“I got friends over the internet. I had friends that like were very supportive of me. Obviously, they didn’t understand because we were all kids and you know we were understanding,” Chris stated.
He further added, “I had a friend who was um she was like my best girlfriend growing up during that time. And we would send messages. And then one day, her mom took her phone and read through her phone and uh found out everything about me and you know a parent being a parent felt the need to like disclose that information and it had you know a lot of falling out and that that drove me back into the closet really hard.”
Chris even discussed individuals that hampered his gender transition during the interview. He did, however, add that plenty of individuals were very encouraging.
‘I’ll discover myself’
Chris, sadly, had to deal with more than just his closest friend's mother overhearing their conversation. He spoke more about his predicament, stating, “[I’ve had it] happen a couple of times where it’s like, I’ll discover myself, I start to come out, and then something happens and I’ll go back in. And for me, the process has always been like an ebb and flow a back and forth [thing].”
In April 2023, Chris, who had endured these trying circumstances for years, spoke out about transitioning. He disclosed that he was on hormone replacement therapy and claimed this was the cause of his altering look. He also changed his Twitter pronoun section to any pronouns. In a tweet, he stated that HRT saved his life. He expressed his happiness at taking this decision in the Banter interview.
