A consortium that includes Leeds chairman Andrea Radrizzani has completed its takeover of Italian club Sampdoria. Leeds’ majority shareholder Radrizzani’s company Aser Group and finance company Gestio Capital announced they had concluded a deal to save financially-stricken Sampdoria late on Tuesday night. In a statement released on Sky Sports Italian reporter Gianluca Di Marzio’s social media sites, Radrizzani said: “We are nothing short of thrilled to be able to announce that we have completed the acquisition of this extraordinary club. “The history and coat of arms of Sampdoria are safe and I think my happiness is (for) of all the people who were suffering for these colours. “My thanks at this time go above all to all those people who worked relentlessly to ensure that this agreement found a just conclusion. “And in particular I have to extend a huge thank you to Matteo (Manfredi, Gestio Capital principal) and to the lawyer De Gennaro. “Without them none of this would have been possible. From today we move on…. and I personally can’t wait to get to work.” Radrizzani, who bought Leeds for £45million in 2017, is expected to sell his 56 per cent stake in the Premier League club to American co-owners 49ers Enterprises. The financial arm of NFL franchise the San Francisco 49ers increased its stake in Leeds to 44 per cent at the end of 2021 with a deal in place to buy Radrizzani’s stake and take full control before January 2024. 49ers Enterprises has been reported to be keen to complete a takeover this summer, but the deal was contingent on Leeds remaining in the Premier League and it remains to be seen how relegation will affect a possible change of ownership at Elland Road. Rome has decided to open to the public the ancient square where Julius Caesar was supposedly stabbed to death. It was reported that authorities in Rome are opening a new walkway on the ancient site on Tuesday in a historic decision. The remains of ancient structures – including the one where Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC – have been opened to tourists. Julius Caesar was assassinated by about 40 Roman senators on the “Ides of March”, or 15 March, in 44 BC. The stabbing was immortalised in Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar, in which the Roman dictator’s famous last words were “Et tu, Brute? (You too, Brutus?)” after he saw his friend Brutus among his murderers. The real life Caesar died in the capital’s central Largo Argentina square, which houses the remains of four temples dating as far back as the third century BC. These four ancient temples stand in the middle of one of the modern city’s busiest crossroads. But now authorities are throwing open the “sacred area” on the edge of the site where Julius Caeser was assassinated to tourists and history buffs. Visitors will be able to move through the site at ground level on the walkway and see the structures up close from Tuesday, reported Reuters. With help of funding from Italian luxury jeweller Bulgari, the grouping of temples can now be visited by the public. The ancient temples were first discovered and excavated during the demolition of medieval-era buildings in the late 1920s as part of dictator Benito Mussolini’s campaign to remake the urban landscape. According to local media, the tourist attraction will now be open every day except Monday and during some major holidays. Google’s decision to delete millions of inactive Gmail accounts could erase millions of photos and other irretrievable memories, users have warned. The purge, which comes into effect next month and will hit any account that has not been used for more than two years, could impact parents who have set up email addresses for young children in order to share and mark milestones with them. It could also inadvertently affect people who continue to manage the online accounts of deceased relatives. Googleannounced the policy in a blog post earlier this year, claiming that the move aims to protect active users from security threats like phishing scams and account hijacking. The mass closure will also free up significant amounts of server space, which will also save the US tech giant money and resources. Google warned that the new policy applied to personal Google accounts, which includes content within Google Photos and Google Workspace tools like Docs, Drive, Gmail, Meet and Calendar. Nicholas Worley, founder and chief executive of digital archiving platform Inalife, urged people to take action immediately in order to risk losing access to the accounts. “If you have a Google account set up for your kids and have been emailing them, or if you manage the account of a deceased loved one... Login, save or backup any important memories and stories,” he wrote on LinkedIn. Mr Worley told The Independent that he began recording memories when he learnt he was having his first child in 2019. “I have friends and now Inalife users who had set up emails for their kids and hadn’t known about the deletion issue before being told,” he said. The Independent has reached out to Google for further information about whether any impacted accounts will be retrievable once the purge has taken place, and the exact number of accounts potentially impacted. In its May blog post, Google’s vice president of product management Ruth Kricheli said that users would be able to keep their account active by reading or sending an email, using Google Drive, watching a YouTube video while logged in, downloading an app on the Google Play Store, or using Google Search. “[The] update helps us continue our advancements in account security, and helps reinforce our commitment to keep your private information private,” she wrote. “This update aligns our policy with industry standards around retention and account deletion and also limits the amount of time Google retains your unused personal information.” Google has already begun sending notifications to both the main email addresses and recovery emails of any accounts at risk of deletion.
