TikToker 'arrested for sneaking into hospitals and posing as a doctor'
A TikToker has reportedly been arrested after posing as a doctor online and for attempting to gain access to a hospital. Matthew Lani posted videos, which have since been deleted, allegedly claiming that he was a medical professional and giving health advice to his followers. He also claimed to have received a medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, which has since been dismissed by the uni. The South African said he was a doctor in Johannesburg, but he was apprehended by police after reportedly attempting to get past security staff at Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg. He is said to have attempted to bluff his way into the building by wearing a stethoscope and a surgical mask. Then, after being followed by law enforcement officers, he tried to escape by jumping out of a bathroom window before being detained. The Gauteng province’s Department of Health released a statement saying: “Lani was caught just before 8pm disguised in a hoodie and wearing a surgical mask with a stethoscope around his neck. "He had previously entered the same facility to curate misleading content under the pretence that he was a qualified doctor." Since the National Prosecuting Authority released a statement, stating that Lani had been released as it had “no evidence” to charge him. NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said: "With the evidence currently contained in the docket, we had to decide as the prosecution if there are any prospects of a successful prosecution or not, and having to do that simply meant that we had to differentiate and make a decision with what is before us. "If we say that we have a person that can say they lied or are we having a person that has misrepresented, if we alleged that a person has misrepresented, then that must be followed by actual or potential prejudice. "So, currently, in the information contained in the docket, we don't have such information hence, we have given instructions for investigations that must be complied with. Once it’s done, the docket can be brought back to the NPA for a decision." Storm Babet: 14 of the wildest photos and videos as extreme weather hits the UK
The UK is bracing for heavy wind and rain from Storm Babet. The Met Office issued a rare red weather warning, stating that there is a “risk to life” from flooding in Aberdeenshire and Angus in Scotland. This is the first red warning for rain issued in the UK since Storm Dennis in February 2020. Police said a 57-year-old woman died after being swept into the Water of Lee, a river in the eastern area of Angus. Meanwhile on Wednesday, there were heavy showers and flooding across the island of Ireland. The army and civil defence units supported evacuation measures in the town of Midleton, County Cork, in the Irish republic where more than 100 properties were flooded. Yellow severe weather warnings have been issued across the week from Thursday until Saturday for a vast area of the UK, covering already parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern and eastern England. Tony Wardle, the Met Office’s deputy chief meteorologist, said: “Storm Babet will bring disruption for parts of the UK in the coming days, with heavy rain and strong winds likely for many. Heavy and persistent rain will fall on to already saturated ground, bringing a risk of flooding. It is important to stay up to date with warnings from your local flood warning agency as well as the local authorities. “As well as heavy rain, Storm Babet will bring some very strong winds and large waves near some eastern coasts. Gusts around 70mph are possible in eastern and northern Scotland from Thursday. Met Office warnings will continue to be reviewed as the forecast develops." Here are some of the wildest photos and videos that have emerged from the storm so far. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Harry Kane signs new deal and fans are confused
Harry Kane has signed a brand new deal – but not exactly the sort fans might have been expecting. As supporters continue to speculate about the striker’s future at Tottenham, it’s been revealed that Kane has agreed to a new boots deal with Sketchers. Barstool Football reports that Kane has signed a major lifetime deal to help launch the first-ever high-end boots from the US shoe brand. It comes after Kane wore a pair of blacked-out "Mystery Pro Player Test Boot" in Tottenham’s friendly game against Shakhtar Donetsk. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter However, it’s not exactly the kind of deal Kane fans had expected the player to be signing this summer. There’s much speculation about his future in north London, after the England captain reportedly placed a time limit on any potential move to Bayern Munich. It was reported that the German giants’ latest offer was understood to be still at least £10m short of what Tottenham would accept. According to the Telegraph, Kane will abandon his pursuit of a transfer if no deal is agreed by the end of this week, with the German club believed to be preparing one final offer for the 30-year-old. Kane has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Tottenham. He did however manage to put any transfer drama behind him when he scored four goals in a 5-1 friendly win over Shakhtar Donetsk on Sunday (August 6). Meanwhile, Kane was feeling the heat off the pitch recently, after taking part on First We Feast's Hot Ones challenge. Have your say in our news democracy.
