British man fighting in Ukraine found dead in water with his hands bound
A British man who fought in Ukraine was found dead in a body of water with his hands tied behind his back, his family have revealed. Jordan Chadwick, 31, who travelled to Ukraine in early October 2022, was fighting in the International Legion. His mother, Brenda Chadwick, told the BBC her family was “devastated” by her son’s death. Mr Chadwick, known as Joe, was from Burnley in Lancashire. He served as a Scots Guard in the British Army from 2011 to 2015. The Ukrainian International Army repatriated his body on 7 August. Brenda Chadwick told the BBC Joe had always wanted to be a soldier. “His passion to support freedom and assist others with his skills led him to leave the UK and travel to Ukraine in early October 2022,” she said. On 26 June, Mrs Chadwick was informed by Lancashire Police that her son had been killed. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) contacted her the following day to confirm the news. There will be an inquest held to find out the cause of Mr Chadwick’s death in February. Mrs Chadwick said: “Although we are extremely proud of his unwavering courage and resilience, his death has been devastating. “No words can be found to describe the loss of such a short life. “A son, brother, grandson, nephew and uncle, who was loved immensely,” she added. A spokesperson from the FCDO said: “We are providing assistance to the family of a British man who died in Ukraine and we are in contact with the local authorities.” The Ukraine Foreign Legion was created by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in February 2022 and consists of soldiers from 60 countries. What are the healthy alternatives to ultra-processed foods?
What are the healthy alternatives to ultra-processed foods?
Scientists have revealed the shocking impact of consuming ultra-processed foods in a short space of time. Two twin sisters were asked to switch up their diets as a part of a King's College London experiment for BBC Panorama. Aimee, 24, spent two weeks eating ultra-processed foods, while her sister Nancy was asked to consume the same amount of calories – but exclusively eating raw or low-processed foods. The results revealed that Aimee gained almost a kilo in weight, while her sister lost weight. The test also showed a difference in blood sugar and blood fat levels, with Aimee's worsening. So, what are ultra-processed foods? Some foods are considered "ultra-processed" under the NOVA food classification system developed by University of São Paulo researchers. They typically have five or more ingredients. The other three categories are unprocessed or minimally processed foods, processed ingredients and processed foods. "They tend to include many additives and ingredients that are not typically used in home cooking, such as preservatives, emulsifiers, sweeteners, and artificial colours and flavours. These foods generally have a long shelf life," writes British Heart Foundation (BHF). Foods include ham, sausages, crisps, ice cream, mass-produced bread, carbonated drinks, instant soups – and even some alcoholic beverages such as whiskey, gin and rum. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Stocking up on ultra-processed foods often leaves no room for healthier options. The BHF encourages people to swap out to make conscious choices, such as swapping out flavoured yoghurts for plain and adding fresh fruit. Instead of buying pre-made sauces, they suggest making your own and freezing the extra portions for another day. Porridge with fruits and nuts also makes a great alternative to sugar-filled breakfast cereals. "In the last decade, the evidence has been slowly growing that ultra-processed food is harmful for us in ways we hadn't thought," Professor Tim Spector of epidemiology told BBC Panorama. "We're talking about a whole variety of cancers, heart disease, strokes, dementia." BHF Senior Dietitian Victoria Taylor said: "We already recommend people adopt a Mediterranean-style diet, which includes plenty of minimally or unprocessed foods such as fruit, vegetables, fish, nuts and seeds, beans, lentils and whole grains. This, along with exercising regularly and not smoking, has been shown to be beneficial for lowering the risk of heart and circulatory disease.” Have your say in our news democracy. Man gored to death during Valencia running of the bulls
Man gored to death during Valencia running of the bulls
A man has died after being gored during a running of the bulls in eastern Spain, authorities said. The festival, organised in the town of Pobla de Farnals in the Valencia region on Saturday, attracts huge crowds and has seen a number of incidents involving spectators and participants being badly injured in recent years. The victim, whose identity has not been revealed, was gored in his side by a bull called Cocinero during the festival on Saturday and sustained severe injuries. He was rushed to the hospital but died soon after, officials said. This was the second injury reported during the festival this week alone. Earlier another man was also gored in the leg by the same bull. However, he survived the incident and was in a stable condition in hospital, officials said. The festival, where bulls are released into the streets and runners dash ahead of them, remains a controversial topic in Spain with activists saying it amounts to animal cruelty aside from the clear dangers to people involved. Festivals involving running of the bulls are nonetheless still widespread in Spain, with a survey by rights groups AnimaNaturalis and CAS International finding that more than 1,820 events take place across all Spanish municipalities every year. The most famous is held in the northern city of Pamplona in July. Despite the risks, the traditional runs remain popular with both locals and tourists and attract huge crowds. However, accidents are also frequent. Last year two men, aged 50 and 46, died after being violently struck by bulls in Valencia while a French tourist in his 60s sustained serious injuries. In 2015 two US citizens and a Briton were gored and eight others injured during a bull run during the San Fermin festival.
