Megan Rapinoe: The legendary US attacker and LGBT+ rights activist adjusting to new role in squad
Megan Rapinoe, 38, burst onto the global stage at the 2011 World Cup in Germany when she scored a screamer against Colombia and celebrated by grabbing an on-field microphone placed near the corner flag and crooning Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA”. A star was born. Since then, the iconic 5’6” neon-haired winger has won gold at the London 2012 Olympics, bronze at the Tokyo 2020 games and both the 2015 and 2019 FIFA World Cups as an integral part of the US Women’s National Team (USWNT). She was named player of the tournament at her last World Cup in France four years ago after scoring six – including a spotkick in the final against the Netherlands – and picked up both the Golden Boot and that year’s Ballon d’Or Feminin. Rapinoe also caused a major political stir back home when she was caught on tape declaring “I’m not going to the f***ing White House” in the event that her side secured the trophy, expressing her disdain for the divisive policies of then-president Donald Trump and advising her teammates to “think hard” before accepting any honours from his administration. She has since continued to use her celebrity to campaign for LGBT+ rights causes and for equal pay for women, speaking on that issue at 1600 Pennsylvania at the invitation of Trump’s successor, Joe Biden. As a player, this summer’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand marks Megan Rapinoe’s last hurrah as she has announced her retirement at the end of the coming season. She arrives in the southern hemisphere having made 199 appearances for the USWNT, scoring 63. Rapinoe was born in Redding, California, on 5 July 1985, one of five children including a twin sister, Rachael, who was also a professional footballer. Her brother Brian first turned his sisters on to the sport and Megan has since spoken movingly about his subsequent battle with drugs and struggle to stay out of prison. As a teenager in high school, Rapinoe played for Elk Grove Pride in Sacramento before enrolling at the University of Portland in Oregon, where she proved herself a prolific goalscorer for the Portland Pilots. Turning professional thereafter, her club career has taken her from the Chicago Red Stars and Philadelphia Independence to the short-lived MagicJack team in Boca Raton, Florida, to Sydney FC in Australia, the Seattle Sounders and to Olympique Lyonnais in France. Get all the latest Women’s World Cup odds here Since 2013, she has played for OL Reign in Tacoma, Washington, favouring the US Pacific Northwest region as her partner Sue Bird, retired basketball superstar, plied her trade nearby for Seattle Storm. The MrBeast and Rosanna Pansino controversy explained as YouTuber is accused of 'faking videos'
The MrBeast and Rosanna Pansino controversy explained as YouTuber is accused of 'faking videos'
Another day, another beef in the world of online content creation – and this time, it’s between MrBeast and Rosanna Pansino. While it’s normally the likes of Logan Paul or more recently SSSniperWolf and JacksFilms sparking drama, this time MrBeast and Rosanna Pansino are the ones causing all the fuss. So what’s it all about? MrBeast, real name Jimmy Donaldson, is the biggest name on YouTube with 204 million subscribers. Pansino is a big name too, with more than 14.5 million subscribers herself. However, she’s accusing him of lying about the outcome of a recent viral challenge. Pansino competed in one of the three hide-and-seek challenges hosted by MrBeast in Creator Games 3. Pansino is now accusing MrBeast of manipulating the edit to present a version of events which didn’t really happen and effectively reducing her role in the clip. Extreme $1,000,000 Hide And Seek www.youtube.com The YouTuber posted a message on Twitter/X with the caption: “I have been allowing others to treat me poorly in private for many years and I’m fed up. “I am going to start standing up for myself and finding my voice.” The content creator wrote: “When the video was released I was shocked, disappointed, and felt hurt. MrBeast (Jimmy) had edited the video to make me look like I performed worse than I did,” Pansino said. “This was extra upsetting because I genuinely believed him when he said that his videos are ‘authentic and real’.” Pansino also disputed the top three shown in the video, which were Zach King, Logan Paula and Larray. “The final [three] people were actually Zach, Quackity, and myself,” Pansino said. “This is what actually happened. Despite Jimmy editing out the only female in the top [three], I was proud of what I achieved.” Pansino doesn't appear to be backing down either as she has now released a series of DM's which she claims were from Donaldson who was asking her to ring him. In the leaked messages Donaldson appeared to ask Pansino to call him to "figure out what happened." She explained that she had no intention of causing drama but was "really hurt by the editing decisions." She added: "Editing me out of the top 3 and making me look like I performed worse than I did felt awful. Quackity was also edited out of the top 3 and he also talked about it." Donaldson replied: "Obviously I wasn’t trying to make you look bad! Just give me a time we can chat, I’m not mad or anything. Just want to help." Pansino added: "I’ll give you some time to look into it and remember and then we can discuss. I’m more than happy to review all the raw footage to help show the timeline of events. Feel free to send it over to my team. Let me know.” She has also claimed that when she asked Donaldson for 'raw footage' he went 'radio silent' on her. Aston Villa easily beat Luton to claim 12th straight Premier League home win
Aston Villa easily beat Luton to claim 12th straight Premier League home win
Aston Villa continued their impressive home form as they beat Luton 3-1 to rack up a 12th successive Premier League win at Villa Park. Unai Emery’s side have won every home league game since February 18 and made light work of the Hatters, with goals from John McGinn and Moussa Diaby giving them the upper hand before Luton captain Tom Lockyer put through his own net. Villa have scored 13 goals in the last three Premier League home games as Emery’s team continue to show they are early contenders for the top four this season. And with games against Nottingham Forest and Fulham coming up, they have a chance to solidify their position in the race before a clash with leaders Tottenham on November 26. This was a seventh defeat in 10 top-flight games for Luton, who have quickly found out how demanding life can be in the Premier League, though they did get on the scoresheet when Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez scored a late own goal. They were up against it from the start as Villa were quick onto the attack and could have led inside four minutes. Ollie Watkins collected a cross and teed up Nicolo Zaniolo, but the Italian’s cushioned effort drifted just wide of the post. Only a brilliant double save from Thomas Kaminski stopped Villa from breaking the deadlock in the 11th minute as he superbly spread himself to block Watkins’ close-range effort and then reacted quickly to stop the follow-up effort. There was no surprise when the hosts went ahead in the 17th minute and it was another masterpiece from set-piece coach Austin MacPhee’s playbook. Douglas Luiz’s low corner was dummied by Moussa Diaby and it ended up with McGinn at the far post, with the Scotland international shifting the ball past Chiedozie Ogbene and into the far corner. That might have given the Villa the platform to go on and flourish, but Luton did well to stifle them and the hosts were restricted for the rest of the first half in terms of clear-cut chances. But that quickly changed after the restart as they doubled their lead in the 49th minute. Lucas Digne’s cross fell kindly to Diaby 12 yards out and he drilled a low effort into the bottom corner. The Hatters came from 2-0 down at Forest to draw 2-2 last weekend, but there was little chance of a repeat here. Villa continued to probe and added a third just after the hour. Diaby made good headway down the right and his cross was turned into his own net by Lockyer. Leon Bailey could have made it four but he shot wide while McGinn did not connect with a right-footed shot when the goal was gaping. Luton did not give up and got on the scoresheet in the 83rd minute, Villa defender Ezri Konsa’s header hitting the crossbar and rebounding off Martinez and into the net.
