Greek wildfire victim returns to find home in ruins
Greek resident Chrysoula Renieri returned to her home on Thursday 20 July to discover what damage had been done after wildfires took hold of the building. Her house was tucked in a wooded area near the resort town of Loutraki because she and her husband loved living in nature. But earlier this week, winds fuelled a major wildfire that burned more than 35 square kilometres (21.7 sq miles) of forest and scrubland, including Renieri’s home. “Everything was destroyed. We have suffered too much damage,” she said. Renieri wasn’t home at the time but her son and family had returned from a swim when the fire started a few houses away. Barbie fans think the new movie references another famous doll brand
Everyone is excited for the release of the highly anticipated Barbie movie, and fans believe the latest trailer actually references another popular doll. In the new trailer, we see Margot Robbie's Barbie and Ryan Gosling's Ken go on a big adventure from Barbie Land to the real world where they encounter normal humans. The words "If you hate Barbie" appear on screen, as Barbie can then be seen interacting with four teenage girls in the next clip, with one of them informing her: "We haven't played with Barbie since we were like five years old." Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter To which Barbie looks disappointed at this revelation as she awkwardly says "Oh..." Now, viewers are convinced the four girls represent another doll brand - but there's a debate as to exactly which one. Some believe the girls look just like, Sasha, Yasmin, Cloe and Jade - aka the Bratz dolls which are widely seen as Barbie's market rivals. The two doll brands (Mattel's Barbie and Bratz's MGA Entertainment) were previously in a legal battle with each other which resulted in Mattel being ordered to pay MGA Entertainment nearly $310m in damages, fees and other costs back in 2011, as per The Independent. While others believe it is an Easter Egg reference relating to a different doll from the Mattel family - the My Scene dolls which consisted of Chelsea, Maddison, Kennedy and Nolee (Barbie was previously part of this line until around 2006 before being replaced by Kennedy). My Scene dolls were introduced in 2002, in a bid to compete with Bratz dolls and were discontinued worldwide in 2011. Elsewhere, viewers of the trailer also believe there was a nod to Barbie's inventor Ruth Handler and 'Barbie Girl' is in the Barbie movie after all but its not the original song. Barbie directed by Greta Gerwig is set to be release in cinemas on Friday 21 July. Have your say in our news democracy. Elon Musk mocked after Blade Runner reference backfires
Elon Musk has attracted the ire of film fans everywhere after making a Blade Runner reference that backfired on him. The Tesla billionaire and owner of Twitter/X made a passing comment about the seminal 80s sci-fi classic directed by Ridley Scott, which was quickly pounced upon by cinephiles on social media. Musk was responding to a clip of Joe Rogan shooting the highly-anticipated Tesla Cybertruck with a bow and arrow – which is one of the stranger moments from Musk’s recent appearance on his podcast this week. Speaking about the vehicle – which Tesla fans have been waiting years for, and is finally being sent out to customers “next month” according to Musk – Musk made reference to the film. “It’s an armored personnel carrier from the future – what Bladerunner would have driven,” he wrote, responding to footage of the moment with Rogan. Referencing a classic sci-fi movie would be no big deal, normally. However, people were quick to point out that the main character played by Harrison Ford was not, in fact, called Bladerunner. Instead, the character was called Rick Deckard – and it left some film fans convinced Musk has never seen the film or he’s misunderstood it. Writing on Twitter/X, one user responded by writing: “Just taking a moment here to appreciate that Elon Musk thinks the main character in Blade Runner is a guy called ‘Bladerunner’”. Another said: “Elon Musk thinks the protagonist from Blade Runner is called ‘Bladerunner’ and also has no f***ing idea what an Armoured Personnel Carrier is.” It comes after Musk appeared on Rogan’s podcast on Tuesday (October 31), which saw Musk kicking off by lighting a cigar and speaking to Rogan, who was wearing a blonde wig and a Puerto Rico shirt throughout the interview to mark Halloween – check out the biggest talking points from the new interview here.
