Rishi Sunak has attempted to show that he is down with the kids by trying his hand at the 'Barbenheimer' double bill trend and everyone made the same point. Despite being one of the youngest prime ministers ever, Sunak has shown that he's still got a long way to go to get some street cred but you can't say he hasn't tried. The 43-year-old leader of the Conservative Party jumped on the Barbenheimer bandwagon this weekend by taking his family to go and see both Barbie and Oppenheimer at his local cineplex. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Posing with his wife, Akshata Murthy and two young daughters, Sunak wrote: "The family vote was only ever going one way…Barbie first it is." Sunak has yet to confirm whether he did get to see Oppenheimer second or whether they'll return to the cinema for a second outing for a far more serious and devastating film. While this is mostly wholesome fun for the family, people couldn't help but wonder how Oppenheimer would hit for a person that actually has access to nuclear weapons. Bizarrely, Andrew Tate of all people weighed into things and told Sunak to "fix the country" which isn't really in the spirit of things. Still, we won't begrudge a man going to the cinema with his family but we'll have to wait and see what he thought of both movies. Hopefully, it'll get brought up at the next PMQs session. Donatella Versace slammed the Italian government for what she described as anti-gay policies in a heartfelt and personal speech that referenced her late brother, Gianni Versace, while receiving a fashion award this weekend. “Our government is trying to take away people’s rights to live as they wish," Versace said in a speech Sunday night, citing in particular a government policy that allows only the biological parent in same-sex couples to be officially recognized as the parent. “They are restricting our freedoms,” she said. “We must all fight for freedom, in a time that still sees trans people suffering terrible violence, a time when children of same-sex couples are not considered their children, a time when minority voices are attacked by new laws,'' Versace said. The speech received a standing ovation from a fashion crowd at La Scala, where Versace received a humanitarian award. Gay rights activists praised her for clearly challenging the government’s actions, but called on the entire fashion community to do more. “Donatella Versace was the first person in Italy to be so clear and explicit in the face of the government’s homophobic politics,’’ said Franco Grillini, a longtime gay rights activist. “She is one of the most important names in fashion, and I invite others to follow her example.” Besides blocking recognition of children of same-sex couples, Premier Giorgia Meloni's right-wing government is pushing through legislation that would ban seeking a surrogate abroad, making it punishable with prison terms and stiff penalties. A 2004 law already banned surrogacy within Italy. The head of Italy’s Gay Party also praised Versace’s support and called on her to back their campaign to get a a referendum on gay marriage on the Italian ballot. They hope to begin gathering signatures in January, aware that “this parliamentary majority does not want to give us rights.” Italy approved same-sex civil unions in 2016, the last major Western country to do so. “Donatella Versace’s declaration is important (...) She made clear how this government is diminishing freedoms and rights for the LGBTQ community,’’ said Fabrizio Marrazzo, spokesman for the Gay Party and the referendum for egalitarian marriage. “We ask her to support us, in particular the campaign to make marriage for lesbians, gays and trans people the same as for everyone else.” Versace, who has been creative director of the fashion house founded by her brother since his 1997 murder, was accompanied to the awards by Alessandro Zan, the Democratic Party lawmaker who drafted legislation expanding anti -discrimination protections to the LGBTQ community. The legislation was stalled even before the Meloni government took office. In a touching moment, Versace also recalled the day her brother Gianni came out to her. “I was 11 years old when my brother Gianni told me he was gay. For me it changed nothing. I loved him and I didn’t care who he loved,’’ she told the crowd. Reddit has been filled with images of John Oliver, as user’s protests against the site’s management take a bizarre new turn. In recent weeks, controversy has been brewing on Reddit after the site announced that it would be charging new fees to developers who wanted to get access to its data. The company said that the change was required to offset the costs incurred by running the site. Third-party developers said that the site’s prices were too high, and many developers – including those behind the most popular apps, such as Apollo – said they would instead shut down. That prompted outcry from the moderators who run the site. In protest, thousands of the site’s forums, or subreddits, went “dark” earlier this month. Administrators turned the forums private so that users were unable to see them, in a protest that ran from 12 to 14 June. That protest led to no change from Reddit. Its chief executive, Steve Huffman, said instead that users would get over the changes and staff suggested those administrators could be removed from their posts. Since then, many of the site’s biggest forums have been discussing how to continue the protest, given that their demands had not been met. And many – including its “aww”, “pics” and “gifs” subreddits, which rank among the site’s most popular – have committed instead to post pictures of TV comedian John Oliver. Oliver appeared to enjoy the attention. On Twitter, he wrote “Dear Reddit, excellent work” and went on to share a large thread of pictures of himself, apparently to ensure that users had enough to post. Other subreddits have continued the protest in their own ways. The subreddit devoted to Apple has filled with posts of its chief executive Tim Cook, for instance. And two of the site’s top 10 most popular forums – those focused on science and music – are no longer dark, but new posts cannot be added.
