Trump's latest indictment echoes January 6 committee findings
Special counsel Jack Smith's criminal indictment appeared to be more than two and half years in the making, but the American public heard many of the key details of the case outlined in a series of hearings last year -- as a well as an 800-page report -- run by the House Select Committee that investigated the January 6 riot.

Prince Harry uses his celebrity to champion 'Heart of Invictus'
There is a small strata of Hollywood deal-making where who's behind a project -- and with whom the programmer gets to align itself -- carries more weight than the specifics. That would seem to define Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry's producing arrangement with Netflix, which bears fruit this week with "Heart of Invictus," a docuseries about the games devoted to wounded, ill and injured veterans.

Leeds’ relegation confirmed as Harry Kane hits double in Tottenham win
Leeds’ three-season stay in the Premier League is over after a 4-1 home defeat to Tottenham confirmed their relegation. Harry Kane and Pedro Porro scored early in either half to put Spurs 2-0 up and, although Jack Harrison reduced the deficit, Kane struck a game-clinching second in what could be his last game for the London club. Tottenham substitute Lucas Moura rubbed salt into Leeds’ wounds by waltzing through a porous defence in stoppage time to complete their misery. Leeds went into the final day needing not only victory, but for relegation rivals Everton and Leicester to drop points and, since they both won, the Yorkshire club’s 21st league defeat of the season was immaterial. The hosts have not kept a clean sheet since February and their hopes of doing so on Sunday went up in smoke in just the second minute. The ease with which Porro and Son Heung-min combined to carve open the defence typified Leeds’ season, with Kane finding space among headless chickens to hit the first nail into the home side’s coffin. Leeds fans responded to Kane’s 28th league goal of the season with raucous defiance, ‘We’re going down’ being one of their chants. Leeds’ players rallied and did their best to give something back to the Elland Road faithful, but in terms of confidence and quality they have long been running on empty. Robin Koch spurned their best chance, heading wayward from in front of goal from Rodrigo’s brilliant cross before Pascal Struijk’s shot was deflected for a corner. Adam Forshaw’s fierce drive was blocked by Davinson Sanchez and another Koch header curled the wrong side of a post. Leeds boss Sam Allardyce cut a forlorn figure in the dugout and saw his side waste further first-half chances as Rodrigo headed Forshaw’s cross off target and Rasmus Kristensen volleyed over. Tottenham continually threatened on the break without creating any more first-half scoring chances, but they soon remedied that. Just as they had done in the first half, Leeds conceded inside the opening two minutes of the second as Kane brilliantly set up Porro, who arrowed a low shot into the far corner from a narrow angle to put the visitors 2-0 up. Leeds gamely searched for a goal of their own and were rewarded when Harrison made space on the edge of the area to drill a low shot into the far corner. But within two minutes Tottenham restored their two-goal advantage. Sanchez’s simple long clearance caught Leeds’ defence all at sea and Kane curled a neat finish inside the far post. As Leeds fans vented their fury at their club’s plight in the closing stages, Moura – on his last appearance for the north London club – completed the scoring after a mazy run from halfway before chants of ‘Sack the board’ rang out through the home terraces. TikTok allowed millions of people to see Canadian ‘helicopter’ wildfire conspiracies before taking down videos
More than 400 wildfires are raging across Canada, and misinformation about the blazes is spreading as well, particularly on TikTok. As Media Matters for America (MMFA) noted in a recent analysis, videos on TikTok claiming the fires were started intentionally by helicopters, arsonists, and “directed energy weapons” have garnered millions of views this month, with the false ideas in these videos then spreading to other social media platforms. Only a few of the most viral false videos have been taken down, the analysis notes. Further scrutiny of such claims provides easy evidence to the contrary, with Canadian officials attributing the fires to a combination of lightning strikes, human accidents, and dry, climate crisis-fueled conditions across the country. “We are already seeing one of the worst wildfire seasons on record,” Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, said in a statement earlier this month. “We must prepare for a long summer.” Other videos about the fires featured clips from a controlled burn by fire officials, as well as what was actually a 2015 wildfire, MMFA found. The Independent has contacted TikTok for comment. Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes including large numbers in Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia. Hundreds of firefighters have arrived from countries like Australia, New Zealand, the US, South Africa, Chile, Costa Rica and France to assist the exhausted Canadian crews. As The Independent has previously reported, misinformation spreads quickly on TikTok during ongoing disasters, thanks in part to public distrust of government officials and an increasingly anti-science bent in US politics. “Social media can be helpful. It alerts people to a situation. It’s a way for widespread dissemination,” Dr Erin Haynes, professor of preventive medicine and environmental health at the University of Kentucky told The Independent in March in the wake of the Ohio train derailment disaster. “But because of that it allows widespread dissemination of false information, so it can go both ways. You have to be very cautious when using social media. Fact-check, find the source of that information.” Read More Canadian wildfire smoke gives Minnesota city the worst air in the US Satellites capture Canadian wildfire smoke pouring into US Midwest Wildfire smoke from Canada might be a problem ‘all summer’

Jake Paul wants to ‘decapitate’ KSI and ‘finish what we started’ following Tommy Fury defeat
As YouTuber and musician Olajide “KSI” Olatunji reels from a controversial loss to Love Island star and boxer Tommy Fury, the Manchester fighter’s previous opponent Jake Paul has called on his influencer rival to “finish what we started”, appearing to welcome a long-awaited bout against the two. Fury defeated his second YouTuber at the AO Manchester Arena on Saturday night as part of the Misfits Prime Card event (which also featured Logan Paul’s fight – and victory - against mixed martial artist Dillon Danis), with the judges’ scorecards handing him a win against KSI by a majority decision. KSI has branded the result “outrageous” and immediately announced his intention to appeal the outcome. Now, in a YouTube video titled “Let’s talk about last night”, Jake Paul talked about Saturday night’s fights and expressed his desire to “decapitate” KSI at some point. He said: “This kid’s ego is out of control, kicking the screens, crying, stuttering, asking for an appeal. This guy is 30 years old. “Take it like a man, don’t be a sore loser, you lost. Tommy had a point deducted and you still lost. “I still want to decapitate KSI. We have to finish what we started, and the Tommy Fury rematch is right there. “Tommy’s going to want that payday. Payday, Tommy, payday!” Let's talk about last night. www.youtube.com As a reminder, after defeating content creator Joe Weller in his first boxing match, Olatunji called out both Logan and Jake Paul for a fight, but the younger brother backed away from the challenge with Logan taking on the man who would later become his friend and Prime business partner. Jake, meanwhile, fought KSI’s brother Deji on an undercard fight on KSI vs Logan Paul, which he won. He then went on to take on several fighters from other sporting backgrounds (such as former basketball player Nate Robinson and former mixed martial artist Ben Askren) before losing to Tommy Fury earlier this year. Paul’s video also revealed his brother’s dressing room victory speech, in which Logan said he “really wanted to knock [Danis] out so badly” but told himself he wasn’t going to “fight with emotion”. This comes after Paul said in a pre-match interview that he ‘forgives’ his opponent, despite Danis sharing multiple pictures online of his fiancée Nina Agdal kissing other men which led to the Danish model filing a lawsuit against him. Paul continued: “The one thing we did do, is beat that f***ing b***’s ass … His face is muddled, to say the least. “He put me through hell these last two months, me and my girl [Nina] got stronger than ever. Baby girl, I love you so much … I can’t wait to start a family with you, maybe we can talk about having that baby soon.” The suggestion was met with cheers from those in the room, with some chanting “do it today” in response. Meanwhile, Danis has taken to Twitter to say he would “call off the wedding” if he was Agdal, challenging him to a fight in “MMA next”. “A jiu jitsu guy with no boxing camp or coach made his debut, never wobbled, never dropped, had no standing eight count, and rocked you multiple times. “You achieved nothing in your own sport,” he wrote. Danis handed Paul the win after being disqualified for attempting to perform an illegal ‘guillotine’ move in the final round, one which led to security guards flooding the ring in absolutely chaotic scenes. The failed move saw the MMA fighter fall to the ground, so we’re not entirely sure he can say he “never wobbled”... Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy.
