Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Jermell Charlo will go head to head in Las Vegas tonight, in a clash of undisputed champions. Canelo puts his super-middleweight titles on the line against the younger Charlo twin, who is undisputed at super-welterweight. Mexican Canelo was originally expected to face Jermall Charlo here, but the WBC middleweight champion’s two-year absence from the ring continues instead – amid injuries and personal issues. Canelo, 33, enters the T-Mobile Arena on the back of successful title defences against John Ryder in May and Gennady Golovkin 12 months ago. Alvarez beat Ryder via decision in Mexico, having beaten old rival Golovkin by the same means at the T-Mobile Arena. Before capping off his trilogy with Golovkin, Canelo suffered the second loss of his career: a points defeat by Dmitry Bivol in May 2022, while challenging the Russian for his light-heavyweight title. That fight took place a week before Charlo’s most recent bout, a stoppage win over Brian Castano. With that victory, Charlo, 33, improved upon his previous result, a draw with Castano in July 2021. Jenson Button won the Formula One world title on this day in 2009 after a fifth-place finish at the Brazilian Grand Prix. A combination of brilliant driving and dramatic incidents saw the Brawn GP driver elevated into fifth spot at Interlagos, while rivals Sebastian Vettel and Rubens Barrichello finished fourth and eighth, respectively. That left Button with a 15-point cushion over Vettel, with Barrichello two points further back with just one race remaining. He became the 10th British driver to win the top prize in motor racing, inheriting the crown from compatriot Lewis Hamilton, the 2008 champion. The 29-year-old Button may not have wrapped it up in the way he would have liked, having won six of the first seven races of the season, but his Brawn team also claimed the constructors’ title just over 10 months after they appeared to be on the scrapheap when Honda pulled out of the sport. The tears and the champagne flowed at the end of 71 laps, with Button’s father John admitting he and his son “cried like babies” when theyembraced each other after the race. “You don’t win the world championship and feel relief, you feel ecstatic,” Jenson Button said. “All the memories, good and bad, go through your mind, not just from this year, but previous years in the sport, especially this year. “I had such a great start to the season and then the last few races were pretty stressful for me because the pace was there, but we struggled a few times. “This team has done staggeringly well and what we’ve achieved this season after the winter we’ve had is exceptional, and I don’t think there has been a season like it in Formula One. “It’s great to be sat here as world champion and I personally think I thoroughly deserve it. I’ve been the best over 16 races and that’s what world titles are all about.” Button completed the 2009 season with a third-place finish at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix two weeks later, finishing 11 points clear of Vettel. Undisputed world lightweight champion Katie Taylor has questioned whether women's boxing has the “strength and depth” to move to three-minute rounds. The Irish fighter will try to avenge the only loss of her professional career when she faces Chantelle Cameron this month in a rematch of their fight in May. Some top fighters led by Amanda Serrano have been pushing for the choice to switch from the traditional 10 two-minute rounds to 12 three-minute rounds for title fights. Cameron signed on to Serrano's statement a month ago calling for the change, arguing that it would put women on par with men and allow them to earn more money. "I haven't really got any preference either way," the 37-year-old Taylor said. "The two-minute rounds are a real fast pace. They say the three-minute rounds will cause more knockouts, but I don't think that's true. "I don't know if women's boxing has the strength and depth to have three-minute rounds really. For me, I really don't care whether it's a two or three-minute round. I spar three-minute rounds all the time. There's pros and cons to both really." The Taylor vs Cameron fight — on 25 November at the 3Arena in Dublin — will be 10 two-minute rounds like the first one. Serrano defended her world featherweight belts two weeks ago with a unanimous decision over Danila Ramos in 12 three-minute rounds in Orlando, describing two-minute rounds as "a sprint" and with the extra minute "we get to showcase our skills." Taylor edged Serrano in a thriller at a sold-out Madison Square Garden in May 2022. It was the first time a women's boxing match headlined at the famous venue. A Taylor vs Serrano rematch was in the works but the Puerto Rican fighter pulled out because of injury. Cameron then stepped in and ruined Taylor's homecoming, the judges scoring the Dublin fight 96-94, 96-94 and 95-95 for the Englishwoman. Taylor (22-1) again is challenging for Cameron's world super-lightweight belts at 140 pounds. The 32-year-old Cameron is 18-0. For Taylor, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist, it was her first loss at any level since being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016. "Mentally and physically I feel a lot better going into this one," said Taylor, who lives and trains in Connecticut. "I just had a bit of a flat night, just a flat performance. I certainly wasn't myself on the night, and I think everybody who watched the fight could see that." Cameron threw nearly twice as many punches as Taylor in the first fight.
