What are England’s best and worst case scenarios in the Euro 2024 draw?
What are England’s best and worst case scenarios in the Euro 2024 draw?
England have ensured a high seeding for next summer’s Euro 2024. Gareth Southgate’s side topped qualifying Group C unbeaten, securing a tally of 20 points to finish as one of the five best group winners. That ensured that they are in Pot 1 for the draw alongside Germany, Portugal, France, Spain and Belgium. It means that the Euro 2020 runners-up will not face any of those five sides in the group stages. That makes England’s path to knock-out stage qualification easier, though there are still plenty of strong sides in the other three pots. With three play-off qualifiers still to be confirmed, the pots look like this: Pot 1: Germany (hosts), Portugal, France, Spain, Belgium, England Pot 2: Hungary, Turkey, Romania, Denmark, Albania, Austria Pot 3: Netherlands, Scotland, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic Pot 4: Italy, Serbia, Switzerland, Play-off winner A, Play-off winner B, Play-off winner C So what is the toughest possible draw for England? While the pots are based on qualifying form, and thus a useful gauge of team quality, we will go by Fifa’s world rankings to determine the best and worst case scenarios for Southgate and his side. The toughest possible draw for England (current world ranking 3rd) would be: Denmark (19th), Netherlands (6th), Italy (9th). The simplest draw, meanwhile, would comprise of: Albania (62nd), Slovenia (54th), Kazakhstan* (100th). *Kazakhstan are part of qualifying play-off Path C When is Euro 2024? Lewis Hamilton and George Russell collide as Max Verstappen claims pole
Lewis Hamilton collided with Mercedes team-mate George Russell as Max Verstappen raced to pole position for Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix. Hamilton will start fifth following a bizarre coming together with Russell, who lines up in 12th, at the end of Q2 at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya. Verstappen finished four tenths clear of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, with Lando Norris an impressive third for McLaren. Pierre Gasly took fourth spot for Alpine, one place ahead of Hamilton, who was half-a-second back, with home favourite Fernando Alonso only ninth in his Aston Martin. Hamilton had to take on a replacement front wing for Q3 after he made contact with Russell in the closing stages of Q2. With both Mercedes men starting their hot laps, Hamilton moved out of Russell’s tow at 210mph on the main straight. But the seven-time world champion was forced to take to the grass after his team-mate, who was making his way past Sainz’s Ferrari, unintentionally, closed the door on him. Hamilton kicked up dirt from the grass as part of his front wing flew off his Mercedes. “George just backed off,” said Hamilton over the radio. “That is really dangerous. I might have some damage on the car.” Although Hamilton’s time was good enough to progress to Q3, Russell was eliminated in 12th. “You didn’t tell me there was a car behind,” said Russell. “I don’t know what the hell was going on in this session. The car was bouncing. I couldn’t get my tyres working. Russell will start one place behind Perez after the Red Bull driver also failed to make it out of Q2. Perez is Verstappen’s closest challenger in the championship but a week on from his horror show in Monaco where he finished 16th and two laps down, he qualified only 11th here. The Mexican ran through the gravel and, although he managed to keep his Red Bull out of the wall, his next lap was not quick enough to carry him through to Q3. “Unbelievable,” said Perez. On an afternoon of shock results, Charles Leclerc, who started this race from pole position last year, will line last but one on the grid. Leclerc complained about the rear of his Ferrari and finished above only Williams rookie Logan Sargeant in the order. “I don’t have the answers for now,” said Leclerc following his early bath. “The only thing I can say is the left-hand corners were undriveable.” Q1 was suspended by nine minutes following multiple spins on a track drying out after earlier rain. Alex Albon, Nyck de Vries, Yuki Tsunoda and Valtteri Bottas all ran off the road, and with gravel on the asphalt, race director Niels Wittich red-flagged the session. Man who killed California store owner Laura Carleton over Pride flag is identified as Travis Ikeguchi
Man who killed California store owner Laura Carleton over Pride flag is identified as Travis Ikeguchi
A gunman who killed California shop owner Laura “Lauri” Carleton after making “disparaging remarks” about her LGBTQ+ flag has been named by authorities. Travis Ikeguchi, 27, shot the 66-year-old mother-of-nine dead outside of her Mag.Pi store in Cedar Glen, 83 miles east of Los Angeles, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement on Monday. Deputies found Carleton outside the store suffering from a single gunshot wound at 5pm (PT) on Friday. She was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical responders. The suspect was located nearby near Torrey Rd and Rause Rancho Rd armed with a handgun, and was shot dead by deputies. The shootings remain under investigation. San Bernardino Sheriff Shannon Dicus confirmed the suspect’s identity at a press conference on Monday afternoon. He confirmed that the suspect had “Pulled down a pride flag and yelled many homophobic slurs towards Carleton” before shooting her. Officials say that the gun used to kill Carleton was a Smith & Wesson 9mm semi-automatic pistol, that was not registered to the suspect. And the sheriff added that the suspect’s family had reported him as missing the day before the murder took place. Carleton has been remembered by family and friends as a staunch ally of the LGBTQ+ community who died while standing up to homophobic hate speech. Carleton, who was married to husband Bort for 28 years, was “murdered over a pride flag that she proudly hung on her storefront”, daughters Ari and Kelsey wrote on Instagram. “Make no mistake, this was a hate crime,” the daughters wrote. Vandals had ripped down rainbow flags several times from the store that Carleton opened in 2021, and each time she would replace them with bigger ones, the daughters said. Ghostbusters director Paul Feig wrote on Instagram that his “wonderful friend” had been murdered by a man who “didn’t like that she had a large pride flag hanging outside of her shop”. “This intolerance has to end. Anyone using hateful language against the LGBTQ+ community has to realize their words matter, that their words can inspire violence against innocent loving people,” Mr Feig said. The Lake Arrowhead LGBT+ community group is planning to hold a vigil for Carleton once Tropical Storm Hilary passes. The new Barbie movie has caused a worldwide shortage of the colour pink
The new Barbie movie is so pink, it’s caused a worldwide shortage of specific paint colours. If the trailer for Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film is anything to go by, it’s going to be one of the brightest movies of all time – with plenty of Barbie’s iconic pink splashed across the screen. Now it’s been revealed there was so much paint used to create the sets for the project that it sparked an international shortage. Gerwig sent an email to Architectural Digest explaining that she hired production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer to create the Barbie dreamhouse that much of the film takes place in. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter The set was put together at Warner Bros. Studio in Leavesden in Hertfordshire Speaking about the art direction, Gerwig said that she wanted the set to give the feel of "maintaining the 'kid-ness'”, and having a sense of "authentic artificiality". Barbie | Main Trailer www.youtube.com They achieved this in part by hand painting the backgrounds for the sets rather than using CGI. "I wanted the pinks to be very bright, and everything to be almost too much," she explained, saying that she wanted to remember "what made me love Barbie when I was a little girl". Gerwig couldn’t have realised the knock-on effect of the decision, though. Greenwood spoke to the publication and revealed that the creation of the set led to a shortage of the fluorescent shade of Rosco paints. "The world ran out of pink," she said. The new film certainly looks eye-catching, with a star-studded cast featuring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell and more. Meanwhile, the lineup for the movie soundtrack was also announced with music from Dua Lipa, Lizzo, Charli XCX, and even Ken himself as Gosling being listed. In addition Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice have made a new version of AQUA's “Barbie Girl,” which can be briefly heard in the trailer. Barbie is set to be released in cinemas on Friday 21 July.
