No fitness concerns over Declan Rice, says Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta
No fitness concerns over Declan Rice, says Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta
Mikel Arteta allayed concerns over star signing Declan Rice’s fitness ahead of a potential first Arsenal appearance against the MLS All-Stars on Wednesday. The 24-year-old midfielder completed his British record £105million move from West Ham to the Emirates Stadium at the weekend. Rice travelled with his new team-mates to the United States but was unable to train in Washington DC on Monday, working on an exercise bike by the pitch. “We just wanted to manage him,” Arsenal boss Arteta said of the England international. “Obviously a lot has happened to him in the last five or six days. “He had a very hectic schedule and he had a few training sessions that went really good, but prior to that, he didn’t do much before he joined us. “So we wanted to just manage him. He trained today with us. He was in good form and he’s fine.” Wednesday’s match kicks off Arsenal’s pre-season tour of the USA and Arteta is looking forward to facing the Wayne Rooney-coached All-Stars at Audi Field. “It’s going to be a special, unpredictable game obviously because we are going to play and change a lot of players as well,” the Spaniard said. “It’s great to be invited and be part of this and hopefully we can give something back to the fans to cheer.” Read More Charity boss speaks out over ‘traumatic’ encounter with royal aide Ukraine war’s heaviest fight rages in east - follow live

Sheff Utd and Tottenham condemn racist abuse aimed at Wes Foderingham
Sheffield United have condemned racist abuse and threats aimed towards goalkeeper Wes Foderingham following the 2-1 Premier League defeat at Tottenham. Foderingham, who made a string of fine saves to deny Spurs before conceding two goals in added time, said in an Instagram post on Saturday night: “I don’t mind opposition fans calling me every name under the sun. But be easy with the racism and family threats. Think before you type.” The Blades responded on Sunday morning offering support for their keeper and promising to investigate. A statement read: “Sheffield United condemn the racist, abusive and threatening messages that have been sent to Wes Foderingham after yesterday’s game against Spurs. “The club will now work with relevant bodies to investigate and support Wes. “There is no room for racism in our game.” Tottenham also responded with a statement of their own offering to assist Sheffield United with their investigation and ban any Spurs fans found to be responsible for the abuse. The Spurs statement read: “We are disgusted to hear of racist, abusive and threatening messages sent to Wes Foderingham following yesterday’s match. We are disgusted to hear of racist, abusive and threatening messages sent to Wes Foderingham following yesterday’s match Tottenham statement “The Club stands firmly against all forms of discrimination and will cooperate fully with Sheffield United and the relevant bodies in their investigations. “We shall not hesitate in taking the strongest possible action, including Club bans, against any so-called fan found responsible.” Paul Heckingbottom’s side were 1-0 up heading into the closing stages at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium thanks to a Gus Hamer opener. But late goals from Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski turned the game around and the Blades are still winless from their opening five fixtures. Jessica Pegula says it was a 'bummer' Cotton Eye Joe played during crucial Canadian Open point
Jessica Pegula says it was a 'bummer' Cotton Eye Joe played during crucial Canadian Open point
Tennis star Jessica Pegula has responded to the now viral gaffe at the Canadian Open which saw the song 'Cotton Eye Joe' play during a crucial point in her game against Iga Swiatek. The American upset the world number one in three sets to reach the final however there was only one moment that tennis fans were talking about after the contest. During a tie-break in the second set, Swiatek was serving at 3-4 when inexplicably the 1995 school disco classic 'Cotton Eye Joe' by Rednex started to play over the tannoys. The moment shocked those in attendance in Montreal and play was briefly paused. Speaking at the post-match press conference 29-year-old Pegula said that the she thought the moment was "funny" adding: "I've never had that happen, let alone with ‘Cotton-Eyed Joe.’ I was, like, ‘Is this really happening right now?’ Of all the songs. It was just, like, what is going on?” However, it wasn't all fun and games as she would go on to lose the tie-break. Even more annoying for her was the fact that the return she played just before Cotton Eye Joe blasted out of the speakers looked to be a good one. She said: "Yeah, it was a bummer because I hit a really good lob, and she barely got it, and I had a really good play on the ball, and she was kind of out of position from the lob that I hit. "So, I mean, I don't know if I would have won the point. Maybe. I would have been up 5-2, but that doesn't mean I'm going to win the tiebreaker. I think the wind started shifting, so I felt like I was really against the wind on that side, the side that that point happened on." Despite the setback Pegula still managed to defeat her Polish opponent and will now play either Elena Rybakina or Liudmila Samsonova in the final. Have your say in our news democracy.
