Jack Grealish praised for major donation to Birmingham City fan with weeks to live
Jack Grealish has been praised for appearing to donate £5,000 to a 20-year-old Birmingham City fan who was given only weeks to live. The former Aston Villa star put old rivalries aside to donate the money to Dylan Lamb, who is battling blood cell cancer, according to an entry on GoFundMe. Lamb’s family have put together a £1m appeal on the fundraising site to raise money for a clinical trial of treatment in America. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter One of the more than 7,000 donations was seemingly that of the Manchester City and England winger, whose contribution was the highest valued. Dylan’s sister-in-law Kelly Payne said: “We've been sending the appeal to loads of footballers – I think he probably saw it.” Meanwhile another person on social media, a Swansea City fan, said Grealish “continues to show how much of a class act he is. And that not all footballers are out of touch with the fans .. Living his best life at the same time.” Another person tweeted: “Fantastic gesture by Jack Grealish for a great cause #bcfc #mcfc.” Grealish previously made headlines after donating £5,000 towards a friend and a Villa fan's funeral after his tragic death earlier this year. The 27-year-old footballer’s rivalry with Birmingham City is a deep one. Not only did he captain the club’s arch nemeses Aston Villa, but a Birmingham supporter once invaded the pitch during a clash between the two to punch Grealish in the head. The then-Villa player eventually went on to score the winning goal in that match. Dylan's mother, Kim Veitch, said: “Wow, we as Dylan's family and friends cannot even begin to express enough of our gratitude for all the donations, shares, and messages of support (the messages really are helping us to stay positive). “We really feel the love and prayers and we would like to thank each and every one of you individually for your support. Dylan is so touched by it all and sends his sincere thanks too. Please, please, please keep sharing his story so we can get it out to as many people as possible.. “Please please please keep pushing and sharing, to help get Dylan the treatment he needs and deserves. He has fought so long and hard, let's carry him the rest of the way. Much love!” Birmingham City FC added on Twitter: “Blues supporter Dylan, 20, is currently fighting for his life, with his best chance of survival being a clinical trial in the US. Due to his life expectancy, he has just weeks to hit his target”. Have your say in our news democracy. Pubs could open early on Sunday for the Women's World Cup Final
Pubs and bars might open earlier than usual this Sunday so fans can watch England play Spain in the Women’s World Cup final at the early kick off of 11am. According to The Athletic, while they are yet to make a decision, UK government departments are holding talks to override licensing laws which give pubs specific hours to open and prohibits the sale of alcohol before 10am on a Sunday. Rules can be temporarily relaxed by the Home Secretary for “an occasion of exceptional international, national, or local significance” without the need for pubs to apply for a temporary event licence. This has happened for royal events such as jubilees and weddings and the FIFA World Cup in 2014, which was based in Brazil meaning that many games finished late at night in the UK. So hopefully they do the same for the final this weekend. It comes as England beat hosts Australia 3-1 in Wednesday’s semi-finals to book their place in the final and in doing so marked the first time England have reached a World Cup final since the men’s team won on home soil in 1966. Meanwhile, the UK government has also said there are “no plans” for a public holiday if England win the World Cup despite even the likes of Labour leader Keir Starmer calling for one. That's a shame, but fingers crossed the government does us a solid on the pubs front. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Ferrari duo top FP2 after chaotic night at Las Vegas Grand Prix
Formula One bosses were facing up to one of the most embarrassing days in the sport’s recent history after practice for the much-anticipated Las Vegas Grand Prix was completed at 4am in an empty arena. After months of hype leading up to the £500million race, the first running was abandoned with just eight minutes on the clock. Second practice was then delayed by two and a half hours, and played out in front of vacant grandstands after furious fans were ejected to comply with local laws. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc topped the order, with Max Verstappen sixth and Lewis Hamilton ninth, but the event - billed by F1 chiefs as the greatest show on earth - dramatically unravelled more than seven hours previously. A water valve cover broke free from the newly laid tarmac and tore into the underbelly of Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari at 210mph on the Las Vegas Boulevard. The force of the impact visibly jolted Sainz in the cockpit and, amid a flurry of white smoke and orange sparks, disabled his machine. Race director Niels Wittich red-flagged the session, but not before Esteban Ocon also struck the debris. On-board footage from Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin captured the 42-year-old dramatically dodging the loose drain cover. Eleven minutes later, at 8:49pm, it was announced practice would not be resumed. Both Sainz and Ocon escaped without injury - but their cars were severely damaged. A giant hole tore through Sainz’s Ferrari leaving his mechanics facing an extensive repair job. Team principal Frederic Vasseur, who appeared in a pre-arranged press conference moments later, was furious. “We completely damaged the monocoque, engine and battery,” he said. “It is just unacceptable.” Second practice had originally been scheduled to start at midnight. But it was postponed as all 30 drain covers along the 1.2-mile Las Vegas Boulevard - which runs against the backdrop of Caesars Palace, Bellagio and Venetian hotels - were inspected. The covers were removed and holes filled with concrete and quick-drying resin in a hasty repair job. The track was finally deemed fit-for-purpose at 2:30am local time. However, when the running resumed the stands were empty after strict labour laws posed a security risk. Some disgruntled fans, who refused to leave, were moved on by police. A general admission ticket for the three-day event costs 500 US dollars (£400), while a hospitality suite was sold at an eye-watering 150,000 US dollars (£120,000) for the three days. The disastrous failure in Las Vegas comes 48 hours after a Superbowl-like opening ceremony, and a day on from triple world champion Verstappen heavily criticising the staging of the Grand Prix - the first here in four decades - as “99 per cent show, and one per cent sport”. F1 executives are keen to build on the sport’s growing popularity in the United States. The race in Nevada joins Austin and Miami as the third in America. Yet the mess here drew parallels with the 2005 United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis where only six drivers took part amid tyre safety fears. Leclerc finished half-a-second clear of team-mate Sainz. Verstappen, a winner of 17 of the 20 rounds so far, was nine tenths adrift with Hamilton 1.3 sec back in his Mercedes. Third practice is due to begin at 8.30pm on Friday (4.30am GMT on Saturday) with qualifying for Saturday’s 50-lap race taking place at midnight (8.00am GMT on Sunday).
