Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo leave Italy camp over Public Prosecutor Office investigation
Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo leave Italy camp over Public Prosecutor Office investigation
Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali and on-loan Aston Villa forward Nicolo Zaniolo are returning to their clubs from Italy’s training camp after it emerged they were being investigated by the Turin Public Prosecutor’s Office. The Italian Football Federation said the decision was taken because the players “are not in the necessary condition” to be involved in the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and England, as well as “for their protection”. The statement from the FIGC did not specify the nature of the investigations which Tonali and Zaniolo, who is on loan at Villa from Galatasaray, were facing. Reports in Italy claim it is relation to an investigation into illegal betting. On Wednesday, it was reported that Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli was under investigation for alleged betting breaches. The FIGC statement on Thursday read: “The federation announces that this afternoon the Turin Public Prosecutor’s Office has conducted investigations into players, Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo, who are currently training with the national team at the Coverciano Federal Training Centre. “Regardless of the nature of the events, considering that the two players are not in the necessary condition to face the matches scheduled for the next few days, the federation has decided, also for their protection, to allow them to return to their respective clubs.” Italy, the reigning European champions, host Malta in Bari on Saturday before travelling to Wembley to face England next Tuesday in a repeat of the Euro 2020 final. England are currently top of Group C on 13 points, six ahead of second-placed Italy who have played a game less. Newcastle and Aston Villa have been contacted for comment. Six people charged in straw donor scheme to elect Eric Adams as New York City mayor
Six people charged in straw donor scheme to elect Eric Adams as New York City mayor
Six people were charged Friday in an alleged scheme to divert tens of thousands of dollars in public funds to New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ campaign months before his election. The indictment announced by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg does not implicate Mr Adams or any other city employees. Rather, it describes a straw donor scheme orchestrated by individuals with business before the city who hoped to maximize their donations to the future mayor in exchange for political favors. “We allege a deliberate scheme to game the system in a blatant attempt to gain power,” Mr Bragg said in a statement. “The New York City Campaign Finance Board program is meant to support our democracy and amplify the voices of New York City voters. When the integrity of that program is corrupted, all New Yorkers suffer.” Prosecutors said the scheme was led by Dwayne Montgomery, a former NYPD inspector currently listed as the director of integrity for the Teamsters Local 237, which represents municipal workers. According to the indictment, Mr Montgomery recruited friends and relatives to take advantage of the city’s generous matching funds system, which provides an eight-to-one match for the first $250 donated by a city resident. In addition to Mr Montgomery, the indictment names as defendants Shamsuddin Riza, Millicent Redick, Ronald Peek, Yahya Mushtaq, and Shahid Mushtaq. According to prosecutors, between 2020 and 2021, those who made donations in their own name were reimbursed by Mr Montgomery, who provided more than $40,000 of his money. He worked with a string of co-defendants to help recruit donors, including Mr Riza, who indicated he was hoping to secure work from the city. “FYI ! This is the one I want , Safety , Drywall , and Security one project but we all can eat,” Mr Riza wrote in a July 2021 email to Mr Montgomery, sending along the information for a construction project called Vital Brooklyn, prosecutors allege. Mr Montgomery also worked alongside a campaign representative to organize a virtual fundraiser for Mr Adams in August, 2020, prosecutors contend. The representative is not named in the indictment. None of the defendants could immediately be reached for comment. Mr Adams' campaign released a statement denying any involvement in the alleged scheme. “There is no indication that the campaign or the mayor is involved in this case or under investigation,” a spokesperson for Mr Adams’ campaign, Evan Thies, said in a statement. “The campaign always held itself to the highest standards and we would never tolerate these actions.” The defendants each face charges of conspiracy, attempted grand larceny, and offering a false instrument. Woman divorces ghost husband Edwardo and now claims he's stalking her
Woman divorces ghost husband Edwardo and now claims he's stalking her
A woman who made headlines after ‘marrying’ a ghost has revealed her former lover is stalking her – after they famously ‘divorced’ earlier this year. Brocarde, a singer and songwriter from Oxfordshire, fell in love with Edwardo – the ghost of a Victorian soldier – in late 2021 after he appeared in her home. But after a rocky marriage marred with cheating allegations and him often ‘ghosting’ her for days on end, Brocarde called it quits this summer, having an exorcism to rid herself of the spirit. She enjoyed a few “blissful” months without Edwardo before becoming suspicious that the ghoul had re-entered her life – allegedly disguising himself as other identities. While the singer has been attempting to move on with human men, she claims her ex is haunting her. “I thought that I’d started a new ghost-free chapter of my life,” Brocarde told NeedToKnow.co.uk. “It wasn’t until I started to think about moving on that disturbing and creepy things started to happen. “I embarked on a post-divorce trip to Paris to find myself and I ended up finding ‘Fabienne’, or so he called himself. “I was walking down the banks of the river Seine chasing the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, cowing under my umbrella as raindrops poured off it, and then it struck me, glistening in a puddle – the reflection of a French man. “I tilted my umbrella back but nobody was around, I looked back towards the puddle the man was clear as the ocean.” Brocarde claims the ghost appeared to be a chef who introduced himself as Fabienne and then followed her home. She said: “A holiday romance with a Parisienne ghost [was] surely too good to be true. “He later revealed himself as Edwardo – it was a honey trap all along. “I couldn’t believe I’d been catfished by a ghost.” Since then, she says Edwardo has continued to harass her under the guise of being different spirits. She added: “After the French encounter Edwardo ghosted me again. “I cautiously started to go on dates with living humans. “I returned home from a date with a bunch of flowers, and Edwardo thought it would be amusing to pull the heads off all of the roses and scatter the petals on my bed. “He’s even learnt to play Careless Whisper on the saxophone – I mean, at least I think it’s him, the sound echoes in the distance sometimes when I’m taking a bath in candlelight. “He’s getting really jealous of the fact that I want to date a modern man. “He knows I no longer find his uniform attractive so he’s going to extreme lengths to pull me in, he’s even given himself a modern make-over and presented himself as a Ken doll," she continued. "I thought I was going crazy when the image of him with cropped blond hair and a pink suit appeared, I could tell it was him though as his gaunt harrowed eyes locked into mine and slowly he merged back into a rugged Victorian soldier.” While Brocarde is eager to move on with a living man, she said she has been told she has a “special gift” that helps her connect with the dead. And while she is open-minded when it comes to the spirit realm, she has been left horrified by Edwardo’s antics. The singer added: “It’s terrifying, that’s why I wanted him exorcised. “A medium told me Edwardo would always be with me and that’s a thought that I can’t come to terms with. “I feel now I’m not consenting of Edwardo’s presence and I’m having trouble getting him to disconnect from me.” For now, she’s focusing on her work as a singer-songwriter, and has released a post-divorce tune ‘Just Another Anthem’. Brocarde added: “I feel now it’s the time for me to focus on my singing and songwriting – Edwardo has provided me with a ton of inspiration, so that’s something to thank him for. “Moving forward I feel like I need a bit of flesh on my bones. “Skeletons and dead men may seem hot but in reality, they are stone cold, unpredictable and scary.” Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy.
