Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has signed a two-year deal with French club Lorient. Mendy left Man City last month at the expiration of his contract, having not played for the Premier League and Champions League winners since 2021. The 29-year-old was cleared of rape and attempted rape at Chester Crown Court last week. Mendy, who progressed through Le Harve’s academy before establishing himself during three seasons at Marseille, joined City in 2017 for a reported fee of £52m after a solitary campaign with Monaco. He would go on to be involved in three Premier League title wins with Pep Guardiola’s side but his last appearance occurred during the opening game of the 2021-22 in defeat at Tottenham. Later that same month, Mendy was reprimanded in custody after being charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault in August 2021. City suspended the French full-back, who was granted bail the following January but only after being charged with three more counts of rape. In May 2022, Mendy pleaded not guilty to seven charges of rape, one attempted rape and one sexual assault. The next month he was charged with another count of rape, and in September he was found not guilty on one charge of rape. Mendy was found not guilty of six counts of rape and one court of sexual assault in January, but the same jury could not reach a verdict on another count of rape and one count of attempted rape. It saw a retrial and last week Mendy was found not guilty of one charge of rape and one charge of attempted rape, which has allowed the defender to resume his professional career. Lorient finished 10th in Ligue 1 last season under Regis Le Bris and the player will begin work with his new club on Wednesday. “FC Lorient is pleased to announce today the signing for two seasons of French international left-back Benjamin Mendy,” a club statement read. “The native of Longjumeau, who will wear number five with the Merlus, will take his first steps at Espace FCL today. Welcome Benjamin!”

Adam Boulton has been accused of sexism after questioning the legitimacy of the Women's World Cup. Speaking on his show for Times Radio Drive, the journalist called the game a "random kick around" and appeared to not take it seriously. "Is it serious or is it just a kind of random kick around?" he asked. ‘Are you kidding me, are you asking if Women’s World Cup is serious?’ replied Kate Borsay while laughing, apparently in disbelief. Boulton said he was serious and Borsay replied that the footballers were all "professional athletes". It comes as the very serious tournaments' group stages ended with Germany being booted out of the competition. With the group stages now over, the focus moves to the knockout rounds. Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown has come under fire for her novel, Nineteen Steps, after working with a ghostwriter on the book. The novel was inspired by Brown’s grandmother’s experience of the 1943 Bethnal Green tube disaster, and was ghostwritten by Kathleen McGurl. Only Brown’s name is on the cover of the book, prompting social media users to criticise Brown after the book’s release. One X/Twitter user said: “You should be ashamed. “Ghostwritten celebrity novels have ruined children’s literature and now they’re doing the same thing to adult fiction.” When Nineteen Steps was published earlier this month, Brown posted a photo on Instagram of herself standing next to McGurl. The caption reads: “I couldn’t have done this without you!” Nonetheless, that has done little to silence her critics. One person wrote on Instagram: “So you can become an author and not actually write it yourself these days. What’s the point?” Another said: “You mean she wrote it for you and you’re taking the credit.” Others jumped to the 19-year-old’s aid, pointing out that scores of celebrities have faced criticism for using ghostwriters in the past. Media personality Zoella (real name Zoë Sugg) was slammed for doing the same thing with her memoir Girl Online in 2014. Katie Price and Naomi Campbell have also used ghostwriters for fiction books released under their name. And more recently, Prince Harry’s memoir, Spare, was written by JR Moehringer. That book broke the record for the fastest-selling nonfiction book of all time, with 1.43m copies sold on its first day. One commenter wrote on Instagram: “This author will be paid a s***tone more because Millie’s name is on it. “Ghostwriting is not new, and by sharing this post she is literally acknowledging the author, whose name will also be in the book. “The author will be very happy, and Millie supplied the whole story and all her family’s research. Everyone seriously needs to get off their high horse.” In a March blog post, McGurl said she was sent “a lot of research that had already been pulled together by Millie and her family, and plenty of ideas”.
