Train passengers are being shown how to recognise sexual harassment and intervene without putting themselves in harm’s way through an “immersive” virtual reality experience. As part of work by the rail industry and British Transport Police to ensure passengers feel safe, the VR tool will be available at Edinburgh Waverley station on Thursday. It has been designed to empower bystanders to recognise and help combat sexual harassment on the railway and will demonstrate how small actions such as offering to swap seats or distracting the perpetrator with a question, could make a big difference. The Rail Delivery Group said its research found 85% of women said they would feel relieved if someone intervened when experiencing sexual harassment on public transport. People in Edinburgh have been invited to try the immersive VR experience at their local station. Jacqueline Starr, chief executive of Rail Delivery Group, said: “As an industry we are actively tackling all forms of sexual harassment and are committed to making our passengers feel safe when on board. “By showcasing the ground-breaking VR experience in stations across the country, we’re equipping people with tips on how to safely intervene in situations as a bystander without putting themselves in harm’s way. “Whether you see it or experience it, we ask everyone to report anything that makes you uncomfortable to British Transport Police by texting 61016 or using the Railway Guardian app. “Passengers using Britain’s railways have a right to feel safe and confident to call out these behaviours without fear.” Joanne Maguire, ScotRail chief operating officer, said: “Everyone has the right to go about their day in peace without fear of harassment or abuse. “ScotRail works very closely with British Transport Police and Network Rail to ensure that Scotland’s Railway is a safe environment for our customers and our staff. “To assist us in tackling unacceptable behaviour, it’s important for anyone who witnesses it to report those responsible so that they can be brought to justice. “This VR experience plays an important role in helping bystanders identify inappropriate behaviour when it takes place.” Further events will be held across Britain over the coming weeks and months. A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: “Sadly, many sexual offences take place in front of other passengers. “This campaign plays a vital role in educating passengers on what they can safely and sensitively do if they see someone being harassed. Reports from witnesses are crucial in helping us to remove sexual offenders from the railway. “Where necessary, we can dispatch officers to meet a train at the next stop. Charlotte Dawson has welcomed her second child with fiancée Matt Sarsfield, several days after a “false alarm” that saw her rushing to the hospital. The reality star, 30, shared a photo of her cradling her newborn son while laying in a hospital bed on her Instagram Stories early on Sunday morning (30 July). She wrote in the caption: “Guys he’s here!!! I can’t believe it!!! I came in at 1am I had him by 2.13am.” Dawson, whose father was the late comedian Les Dawson, told her 1.3 million followers: “Can’t wait to update you all as soon as but Matthew has nipped to get me a Maccies [McDonald’s] and I’m having cuddles.” Dawson and Sarsfield, who have been engaged since 2020, are also parents to two-year-old son Noah. In another post, showing Sarsfield holding the baby, Dawson wrote: “He’s turned up with no Maccies ffs [sic]. But look at my beautiful baby daddy with our boyo [sic]. All happened so fast but thank you for being amazing Matt.” Several days earlier, Dawson revealed that she was rushed to hospital after her water had broken. However, it was a “false alarm” and she was sent home to wait until she went into labour. Her second baby has been dubbed her “rainbow baby”, a term that refers to a child born after the previous loss of a baby due to miscarriage, stillbirth, or death during infancy. She opened up about how she and Sarsfield were “over the moon” when they first discovered she was pregnant, but later it turned out it was “just not meant to be”. “Miscarriages are so common and not spoken about enough. We are so heartbroken right now, have no words and just don’t feel up to posting being my happy silly self right now,” she said. Boxing coach Brian McIntyre was handed a suspended 20-month prison sentence on Monday, after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm. “BoMac”, who coaches undisputed welterweight champion Terence Crawford among others, was arrested at Manchester Airport on Sunday 3 September, one day after guiding Chris Eubank Jr to victory over Liam Smith at the AO Arena. The American, 53, was detained by armed police after a scan of his checked-in luggage revealed the presence of a firearm and ammunition. A statement from Greater Manchester Police at the time said McIntyre was charged with possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition for a firearm without a certificate. On Monday 4 September, McIntyre attended Stockport Magistrates Court and was remanded in custody to await a sentencing hearing. On Monday (9 October), McIntyre pleaded guilty at Manchester Crown Court, where he received a 20-month sentence, suspended for two years. The news was first reported by journalist Oliver McManus, who added that Crawford was “one of a number of people to give in-person evidence”. The BBC reported that Judge Nicholas Dean KC said McIntyre was a “thoroughly good man” and that the “exceptional circumstances” of the case warranted a departure from the usual five-year minimum jail term. Dean said: “This is manifestly and obviously a case where it is appropriate to suspend the sentence.” Later on Monday, Crawford posted an Instagram photo of himself and McIntyre side by side, seemingly at Manchester Crown Court. On Tuesday (10 October), McIntyre wrote on Instagram: “Thank you HMP Birmingham Prison for your hospitality for the 5 weeks. All the guards and inmates was nice and cool, sorry I couldn’t stay longer but [due] to my outstanding legal team from the USA and London, I have to get back to work, woooorrrk tiiiimeeee!!!!!” In July, McIntyre was in Crawford’s corner for the American’s stoppage win over Errol Spence Jr, which saw Crawford become undisputed welterweight champion. Crawford’s performance was widely hailed as a masterclass, with many fans and pundits crowning the 36-year-old as boxing’s pound-for-pound No 1.
