Want to enrage a bunch of angry men on the internet? Just make an incredibly popular film with a strong feminist message. It works like a charm. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has done just that. As most people queued around the block decked out in pink feather boas and sunglasses this weekend, the keyboard warriors took a different approach: hate-watching the film of the summer then slating it online. So here are some hilarious reviews of a totally harmless movie. And before you read on: SPOILER ALERT! Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter The infamous Ben Shapiro kicked things off by declaring on his YouTube channel that Barbie was a "s**tshow" and one of the worst movies he'd ever seen. Blogger Jim Schembri wrote on Rotten Tomatoes: “For the first 30 minutes or so Barbie is a fun, feather-weight satire...Then the stuff about patriarchy kicks in and the film turns into a thinly disguised #metoo rant, trading comedy for man-bashing and a lot of confused point-scoring about sexism.” Meanwhile, Christian Toto wrote on the same platform: “Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling can't save story captured by man-hating agenda.” Comedy writer Aaron Gillies, who posts on Twitter under the pseudonym @TechnicallyRon, took some similar reviews from Letterboxd and put them on the movie poster. Turn over to IMDB, and it’s much the same. One account, nhsiposm, denounced the film’s “radical views” and called it “an extended radical feminist diatribe packaged within the guise of a fun summer blockbuster.” Meanwhile, pat-394 said it was “a shameful piece of cinema, unless you're of a certain ideological bent, in which case you'll love it. For everyone else: Avoid like the plague.” And finally, we have to give a little bit of credit to jasonburnscorp for coming up with the headline: “Barbage”. That’s nice. He goes on: “Though initially pretty in detail, this junk box Frankenstein of a film quickly turned into a radical feminist fair, mixed with corporate propaganda. Ken (the arch enemy) never had a chance...because he is a man..and men are bad...because they are patriotic?” We’ll gloss over the fact that the last one doesn’t make sense, and simply extend our thoughts and prayers to all of these angry men at this difficult time. Tottenham’s disappointing campaign took another turn for the worse after Bryan Mbeumo’s second-half brace earned Brentford a fine 3-1 win at their London rivals. Harry Kane’s early opener gave Spurs the perfect start in their quest to stay in the hunt for Europa League football, but the visitors turned the tables with an impressive display after the break. Mbeumo grabbed a quickfire brace to help fill the void of Ivan Toney, who on Thursday received an eight-month ban from all football activities from the FA for betting breaches. Yoane Wissa then sealed the victory late on for Thomas Frank’s side with Spurs suffering a 14th defeat of the Premier League season and leaving the pitch to boos after another match with more chants for chairman Daniel Levy to leave the club. Tottenham’s loss at Aston Villa last weekend had added to the glum mood around club, but the sun was shining for this final home fixture of the season and Ryan Mason rung the changes. Attackers Arnaut Danjuma and Dejan Kulusevski earned recalls while the fit-again Yves Bissouma made his first start since January with Spurs’ acting head coach reverting to the 4-2-3-1 formation he used in 2021. Chairman Levy used his programme notes to acknowledge the season struggles but promised to bring “on-pitch success” after a chaotic campaign. One of Levy’s many key decisions this summer – alongside hiring a new head coach and managing director of football – is to try and convince Kane to commit his long-term future to Spurs. After eight minutes Tottenham’s vice-captain provided yet another reminder of his importance. Oliver Skipp, another academy graduate, won a free-kick around 25-yards out and Kulusevski teed up Kane to curl over the wall and beyond David Raya for his 30th goal in all competitions. It was the perfect start for the hosts and Son Heung-min was the next to go close but Raya denied him after Kane’s pass. The strong opening period by Tottenham was not enough to prevent the first round of ‘Levy out’ chants from the South Stand with 23 minutes played to mark his number of years at the club. A second goal for the hosts should have followed immediately after but Emerson Royal’s header was brilliantly cleared off the line by Rico Henry after good work by Kulusevski and Son. Mathias Jensen side-footed over for Brentford minutes later but Spurs remained in the ascendancy and Danjuma headed wide before Ben Mee thwarted Son with a vital block. Kulusevski, impressive in the number 10 role, ended the half with a firm near-post effort that Raya pushed over to ensure it stayed 1-0 at the break. Bees boss Frank had seen enough and introduced Mikkel Damsgaard for the second half, which paid dividends straight away. It was Damsgaard who fed the ball into Yoane Wissa and he passed into the path of Mbeumo, who cut inside from the right and curled into the bottom corner to level in the 50th minute. While Kane blazed over after another Kulusevski through ball minutes later, Brentford had their tales up now and grabbed a second with 62 on the clock. Aaron Hickey played a superb ball down the right and Mbeumo raced away and dribbled into the area before side-footing into the bottom corner for his ninth goal of the campaign. More chants for chairman Levy to leave the club followed but only after Lucas Moura had been introduced for his farewell appearance. Mason turned to Pedro Porro and Richarlison next with the latter having half-hearted penalty appeals waved away before Wissa wrapped up the points. Shandon Baptise robbed the ball off Skipp and Mbeumo teed up Wissa, who curled home for his seventh goal this season. There was still time for nine minutes of stoppage-time and Raya to produce two outstanding saves to deny Richarlison before the full-time whistle was met with boos before chants urging Kane to stay amid uncertainty over his long-term future. In today’s world, social media is usually the culprit for circulating conspiracy theories and stories. The recent viral discussion online is the Russian sleep experiment, as some wonder if it was real, after a video claimed a film covering the incident is being made. The story first surfaced on a Creepypasta forum. The post described to readers a Soviet-era experiment where scientist created a stimulant that allowed soldiers to go without sleep for 30 days. As the story goes, in order to prove and showcase the effects of the stimulant, five prisoners were selected and promised freedom at the end of the test. The five men were then locked in the chamber and gas was pumped inside it. However, the story reveals that the experiment did not go well as all the men began to experience symptoms of sleep deprivation. Halfway through the 30 day time period, the scientists conducting the experiment were forced to enter the chamber as there was no visibility due to the gas. When they opened the door one prisoner was dead and the other four had several horrific injuries that were presumed to be self-inflicted. Despite some belief that the Russian sleep experiment is real, it is in fact a work of fiction, as is almost all stories posted to Creepypasta. Stories are shared on the platform to scare readers, with the website initially reposting stories found on existing platforms such as 4chan and Reddit. Over time, the site allowed people to post anonymously and share their own stories. However, it is true that a movie has been based on the story. A skyscraper in Moscow was the target of a drone attack for the second time in two days, as Volodymyr Zelensky warned Vladimir Putin the "war is returning" to Russia. Russia’s defence ministry claimed its anti-aircraft units downed drones headed for Moscow, but one of them ended up hitting the same high-rise building that was struck last Sunday. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that while the attack damaged the facade of the skyscraper’s 21st floor, it didn’t cause any injuries. Ukraine almost never publicly claims responsibility for attacks inside Russia or on Russian-controlled territory in Ukraine, but has increasingly highlighted how destroying Russia’s military infrastructure helps Kyiv’s counteroffensive. This comes as a 10-year-old girl and her mother were among at least six people killed after two Russian ballistic missiles struck an apartment complex and a university building in Zelensky’s hometown yesterday. At least 75 people were injured in the attack on Kyryvi Rih, as Zelensky called it an act of Russian “terror”. The head of Zelensky’s office, Andriy Yermak said the “Russian army is barraging Kherson” and targetting residential areas, adding that four people had been killed and 17 injured in the city.
