Dianne Feinstein’s office confirms health complications are broader than previously known
The office of US Senator Dianne Feinstein has confirmed that the California Democrat was suffering worse health complications from a recent shingles case than she had previously claimed. A spokesperson for Sen Feinstein, 89, told CNN Ms Feinstein, the Senate’s oldest lawmaker, experienced Ramsay Hunt syndrome and encephalitis as part of the diagnosis. “While the encephalitis resolved itself shortly after she was released from the hospital in March, she continues to have complications from Ramsay Hunt syndrome,” the spokesperson said on Thursday. Ramsay Hunt syndrome can occur when a case of shingles affects the facial nerve close to the eye, sometimes causing facial paralysis and hearing loss, according to the Mayo Clinic. Earlier in the day, Sen Feinstein claimed to CNN she didn’t have encephalitis, saying, “It was really a bad flu.” The California senator’s health and mental fitness have long been subjects of scrutiny. Some of her colleagues have called on her to resign. She returned to the Senate last week after being absent for 10 weeks as she recovered from shingles. Upon returning to the Senate, Sen Feinstein told reporters that she had never left. “No, I haven’t been gone,” she said to LA Times’s Ben Oreskes when asked how her Senate colleagues have responded to her return, reported Slate. Mr Oreskes then asked her whether she had been working from home. “No, I’ve been here. I’ve been voting,” she said. “Please, you either know or don’t know.” The absence of Sen Feinstein halted the work of the Senate judiciary committee, where Republicans demanded the California Democrat either return to work or resign from the Senate, rather than allow a temporary replacement. The infighting halted the confirmation of federal judges, one of the main ways Democrats can cement their influence in a divided Congress. As The Independent has reported, Sen Feinstein is part of a generation of elderly leaders at the top of the US political system, leading critics to argue more should be done to make elected office accessible to young people. The present Congress contains the second-oldest Senate and third-oldest House in US history. Generationally, the US population fits roughly into four, equal-sized blocks of about 20 to 25 per cent: ages 0 to 18, 19 to 34, 35 to 54, and 55-plus. The composition of Congress, meanwhile, is drastically tipped toward the elder part of that range, with the median House member aged 57.9 and the median senator aged 65.3. According to Professor Munger, Kevin Munger, assistant professor of political science and social data analytics at Pennsylvania State University, author of Generation Gap: Why the Baby Boomers Still Dominate American Politics and Culture, the age of America’s most senior politicians – Sen Chuck Schumer is 71, Sen Mitch McConnell is 81 – often means that issues that matter to other generations don’t get top billing, leading both to disaffection and to bigger-picture existential issues, like a lack of serious climate legislation or the impending funding crisis of social security. “It’s been clear that because of the size of the boomer generation, at a certain point, we were either going to have to raise taxes on the workforce or cut the benefits,” he said. “We didn’t do either of those things. Sometime in the 2030s, it’s going to run out. They’re not going to cut benefits to boomers. Instead, younger generations are going to have to fully fund this obvious 30-year shortfall.” In the case of social security in particular, many of the leaders deciding on the issue are current recipients, while those younger generations who will likely pay more or get less in the future aren’t represented in office. A similar problem arises with climate change: the leaders holding up urgent action on the climate likely will not be alive to see the very worst impacts of their inaction. “The issues that matter to younger generations don’t get on the agenda at all,” Prof Munger added. Doja Cat acknowledges fan backlash to her style evolution
Doja Cat recently acknowledged the intense fan backlash to her fashion evolution in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar. The Grammy winner has been contending with her fanbase for the past month, taking aim at some fans for naming themselves “Kittenz”, leading to a mass exodus of 250,000 followers on Instagram. However, the “Kiss Me More” singer is unfazed by the actions of certain circles of her fanbase, writing on her Instagram Story: “I feel free.” In the Harper’s Bazaar interview, conducted by rap-radio legend Angie Martinez, Doja Cat theorised that because a lot of fans believe they can “take ownership” over the artists they worship, the artists themselves are “not real to them.” She has decided to rebel against this dynamic, culminating in the mass unfollowing of half a million followers. Still, the unfollowing hasn’t put a dent in the rapper’s social media account, which still boasts over 25m followers, according to Social Blade. Despite her harsh words, she expressed gratitude for the fans who have “stood up for [her] or other people” amidst the backlash. Ever since she drastically changed her look by shaving her head and eyebrows, the “Vegas” rapper has been relentlessly attacked by online trolls. Doja Cat - whose real name is Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini - said that she “really appreciates” the fans who go out of their way to “speak up for someone who is getting bullied,” calling these “some of the most moving moments” she’s experienced as a mainstream artist. She also admitted that her change in style has been a whiplash for her fans, especially for those who feel a sense of “ownership” over her. “There is a shock response that is almost uncontrollable,” Doja Cat said. “I’ve accepted that that’s what happens. So I put my wigs on and take them off. I shave my head or my eyebrows. I have all the freedom in the world.” While Doja Cat noted that she’s in a “kind of chaotic place” when it comes to her sense of style and taste in fashion, she said that she views it as a part of the process of coming into her own. For her, it’s all a product of being in an era of self-discovery. “I’ve just been going into my closet and picking out the most random, weird, not-fitting thing to mix with another thing that does not really fit,” the pop star said. “It’s like mashed potatoes. But I’m embracing that. It’s a little punk. It’s experimental for sure. It’s very manic. But I am going in a darker direction when it comes to visuals and fashion. I have a lot of pent-up feelings and anger, and I want to express it with beauty. I’ve been playing with a lot of prosthetics lately.” Most recently, the pop star wore prosthetics to the 2023 Met Gala honuoring the late Karl Lagerfeld. Her makeup artists used prosthetics to realise her vision of looking like a “humanoid cat” as a nod to the late designer’s beloved feline, Choupette. Her Met Gala look was among many that have pushed boundaries, another being her head-to-toe red paint look, adorned with 30,000 crystals, for Schiaperelli’s haute couture show in Paris last January. Doja Cat also reflected on how her style experimentation has come at a time when she feels more grounded, as part of her overall journey of “learning to love” herself more. “I feel like a woman who is coming into her own,” she said. Adam22's 'beef' with Jason Luv explained after infamous Lena the Plug sex scene
Porn isn’t exactly known for its complex plotlines, but one adult film has spawned a whole manner of twists and turns. We’re referring to the now infamous collaboration between podcaster Lena the Plug and blue movie star Jason Luv. At the end of June, the pair teamed up for a wildly explicit sex scene with the blessing of Lena’s huband Adam22. However, three weeks on from the steamy encounter, Adam22 posted a diatribe against Louisiana-born Luv, telling him he was “officially blacklisted from smashing [his] wife again”. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter So what’s gone down between the three of them? And how did this ridiculous situation all come about? Here’s everything you need to know (and a lot that you probably don’t) about porn’s latest big fallout. How did this all begin? In a recent episode of his ‘No Jumper’ podcast, Adam22 (real name Adam Grandmaison) and Lena (full name Lena Nersesian) revealed how the seeds of the scene were planted at the very start of the year. Adam22 explained that they were in Las Vegas back in January when they bumped into Luv. Addressing his wife, the YouTuber recalled: “I said, ‘Who's the hottest girl here?’ And then [Luv] put his arm around you and walked away with you.” He then noted that the clip racked up nine million views and saw Lena flooded with requests to film a scene with the porn legend. So, just before their wedding in May, Lena said she messaged Luv and told him: “Hey, I'm going to get married and [go] on my honeymoon, but when I come back we should shoot’. “And he was like, ‘OK’.” However, it wasn’t until June, when they all ended up in Las Vegas again, that they finally got down to business. Lena said she and her hubby were having breakfast one morning when she pointed out that Luv was in town. “I was like, ‘I think I'm going to shoot with Jason tomorrow,’ and you were like, ‘OK’, and I walked away,” she recollected. “I went to wash the dishes or something, and then I come back and you're just like, ‘No facial, no kissing,’ – that was the extent of the conversation. “And then I left the next day to do it. And you barely said bye to me because you were playing poker.” Why was it a big deal? Adam22 and Lena are known for their ‘Plug Talk’ show, which sees them interview a female porn actor, then have sex with her at the end of the episode. But this was the first time she’d had sex with another man since the start of her relationship with the YouTuber seven years ago. During their ‘No Jumper’ chat, the couple estimated that they’d had around 200 threesomes together over the years – almost 100 for ‘Plug Talk’, plus “a bunch in our private life, plus a bunch for [Lena’s] OnlyFans”. However, her tryst with Luv was her “debut scene with another man”, they said. What was the response to the sex scene? According to Lena, she’d received “a lot of positive reaction”, while Adam22 had been subjected to a lot of “hate”. "He can handle it, he's a big boy,” she told TMZ in the immediate aftermath, before stressing: "There's way weirder sexual things out there than what we currently have going on." The content creator then defended her fella against taunts that he was a “simp” for allowing his wife to sleep with another man. "I've had 200 threesomes with him and women. Is that a simp?” she asked. "Someone who's been given all of this sexual experience and I get one guy and it's like a big deal?" In a separate interview for Adin Ross' YouTube channel she admitted that she found her experience with Luv "interesting and fun." Asked if she would “choose Jason over [her] husband”, she replied: "I have had sex with one person for seven years, and although Adam is very exciting to me sexually, a new experience is always going to be a little more interesting and different. "Adam could attest to that,” she continued. “A lot of the threesomes we have are probably a lot more fun than him just f**king me on a regular night." Still, she stressed, she was happy with her lot. Telling Ross: “I had fun with Jason, but I still have a lot of fun with my partner and I don't prefer Jason's d**k over Adam's." How did Adam22 feel once the scene was done? “I felt a little jealous at first,” he admitted in a tweet a week after the collaboration. “But overall it wasn’t that big a deal. “She’s watched me sleep with hundreds of girls and it’s never affected our relationship,” he continued. “Sleeping with that gentleman has been amazing for both her career and our business [‘Plug Talk’]. Overall I’m glad we did it.” He later proved that he fully embraced the whole thing by lavishing his wife with an extravagant gift. The self-styled hip-hop expert posted a video to social media showing Lena standing with her eyes closed next to a green Lamborghini. Addressing the camera, he then announced: “OK, Lena, I’m so proud of you doing your first ever BBC scene that I decided that I wanted to get you a little something nice.” She then opened her eyes and shrieked: “What? This? For me? Babe!” before embracing her husband. (For the avoidance of doubt, “BBC” does not refer to the British Broadcasting Corporation here but to a very explicit slang term that we most certainly don’t endorse.) @adam22 Got my baby something nice to celebrare her new scene! Love you boo ❤️ @Lena The Plug What has Luv had to say about it all? In an interview for the X-rated YouTube show ‘The Fan Bus’, Luv was initially full of praise for Adam22 and Lena, saying he felt “honoured that they think so highly of me that they would want me to be the first male she shoots with after so long”. He bragged that he hit the podcaster with “all the best moves” during their scene, adding that he “was catching cramps in places I didn't even know I could catch a cramp”. Luv admitted that the mum-of-one was “mad nervous” in the run-up to the big moment, telling his host that she was “shaking” and “giggly” and told him: “I feel like I'm cheating on my husband.” He said he reassured her that she wasn’t cheating – that she had “permission” – and helped her to “calm down”. The 38-year-old then acknowledged that there’d been some discussion of a threesome between Adam22, Lena and him, and confirmed that he was on board with the idea. “[It’s my job to make money,” he said. However, any hopes he harboured for a “round two” with the couple were swiftly, and categorically dashed, thanks to his next comments. Asked, in the most direct way possible: “Do you think that you f**ked [Lena] better than Adam did?” he replied: “Well, obviously, yes.” But, he acknowledged: “I'm pretty sure [it] probably feels different with Adam, for her, because love is involved – emotions – but as for the physical aspect of getting fucked, obviously.” The interviewer then asked Luv if he still thought he’d be a better lover to her during a threesome involving Adam22, to which he responded: “100 per cent. “It would be like [...] about. And obviously I'm the stronger fighter, so I'm away.” How did that go down with Adam22? Perhaps unsurprisingly, he didn’t take too kindly to Luv’s assessment. Positively seething with rage in a video uploaded to Twitter on Monday night, he said: “Hey, Jason Luv, I trusted you to p**k my wife and it seems like that clout is getting to your head. I'm talking real, real spicy and I ain't really feeling it.” Defending his own honour, he chose to make two key points, the first being that “the angle of the dangle is more important than the cubit of the pubic.” “Number two,” he continued: “My D game, when I'm serving it, man, it's just like your mum's home cooking because there's a special ingredient – it's called love. You ever heard of it?” He then moved onto an ominous third point, threatening Luv: “Don't make me expose you, and you know what I'm talking about – it could get real, real messy out here.” Wrapping up his tirade, he warned: “You don't want problems moving around in these LA streets cause I can make that happen. I'm very, very well connected.” He then concluded with his final point, telling the porn star: “You are officially blacklisted from smashing my wife again.” What happens next? So far, there’s been silence from the Luv camp in response to Adam22’s threats. But everyone wants to know the secrets the ‘No Jumper’ host claims he could easily “expose”. All we can say at this stage is that a threesome is definitely off the cards. And, clearly, there’s no luv lost between them all now. Have your say in our news democracy. This England team aren’t used to losing – the Lionesses must learn to kick the habit quickly
The obstacles on the road to Paris had appeared to be little more than potential problems. The Netherlands would always undoubtedly be the toughest task but after defeat by Belgium and an early World Cup exit their status became increasingly tenuous. England Women needed to make a statement and the circumstances would rarely be more favourable. After all, the Lionesses impressed against Scotland, they brushed off the oft-levied concerns about fatigue. There were a handful of worrying instances in their Nations League opener but they had been fleeting at best. They weren’t supposed to follow it up like this. A 2-1 defeat away from home presents more questions than answers for Sarina Wiegman. There’s no doubt this team are capable of great moments but they can’t afford to allow getting caught out to become a more regular occurrence. Within a matter of minutes in Utrecht it became apparent this was going to be a tiresome night for the Lionesses. Their passing was wayward, their possession uneasy, their defending inattentive. England lacked any semblance of composure and they were made to pay. The Netherlands’ pressure was unwavering, their attacking intent notably creative. England stuck to their shape but that matters little when the opponent takes any opportunity to force you to unwind, bring out your worst tendencies and carve out the gaps. Whipped up by a boisterous home support – a sea of luminous orange wanting to get the better of Wiegman on her return – the Netherlands toyed and made sure to torment the travelling team. Caitlin Dijkstra had an effort batted away by Mary Earps, the England goalkeeper leaped highest to collect the resting corner, but the predominant feeling when she dropped to the ground in a vain attempt to slow the tempo was one of exasperation. England rode their luck but playing in such a manner is always unsustainable: the Dutch opener was long overdue when it finally arrived. Georgia Stanway dawdled at the back and took too long to play the ball forward, Jackie Groenen noticed the opportunity. She pounced and dispossessed the England midfielder, Danielle van de Donk – offside on the replay but handed a reprieve by the lack of VAR – collected and spotted Lieke Martens, prowling the edge of the box waiting for her chance to come. Her precision finish, curled into the top right corner, forced the Lionesses into an uphill battle. There was, at least, some marginal improvement which followed. First Rachel Daly scooped a volley towards Daphne van Domselaar’s goal and was denied by the post, then Van Domselaar was made to showcase her abilities to keep out Lauren Hemp and Lucy Bronze with a fine double save. But Wiegman knew something was still amiss – even if her customary stoic body language refused to admit any concerns. Something needed to change and it’s certainly helpful for England in moments like this to have a master tactician at the helm. Daly made way for Chloe Kelly, the back three was abandoned in favour of a more secure back four, and from the opening moments of the second half it seemed that despite England’s uphill battle having looked increasingly like a mountain they had the perfect sherpa for the task. Hemp began bombing towards the defence in a manner she hadn’t been able to achieve while Kelly replicated such intent on the opposite flank. The game tilted back into balance and Alessia Russo, back in the team after overcoming an issue which kept her out against Scotland, came to the rescue – or at least that’s what the Lionesses would have hoped. Stanway was played in by substitute Kelly, she cut the ball across the face of goal, and, with a slight deflection off Dominique Janssen playing it into the air, found Russo. Those opportunities are her bread and butter and she was at hand, rifling into the same corner where Martens drew first blood. England found their way back into it but little more than that was able to materialise. They couldn’t capitalise and were made to pay. Andries Jonker rejigged his Netherlands team and, when England began to tire, got the better of his country’s former manager. Carelessness was the enemy again, Alex Greenwood sloppily handing off the ball to Martens. She fed Renate Jensen and Earps was beaten at her near post. On the stroke of 90 minutes England became the architects of their own downfall. England are level on points with the Netherlands in their Nations League group after their first two matches. They mustn’t slip into their increasingly regularly seen error-strewn ways when they welcome Belgium to Leicester next month. There were warning signs at the World Cup when England were sloppy but the Lionesses managed to mostly ride their luck on the big stage. Issues were laid to rest by reaching the final, but it’s becoming clear those tendencies remain present. Experimenting with a back three has been a double-edged sword and the formation question remains mostly unanswered: both have their merits, both have their downfalls. The particular way in which Wiegman sorts this side’s problems is less important than sorting them quickly. They managed to stop the rot which had been setting in before the World Cup; Team GB’s Olympic hopes rest on it being stopped from seeping in once more.
