Man once sold £78 shipping container to Elon Musk for more than £600k
A man once managed to sell Elon Musk a container he got for £78 for £600,000. Talk about a markup. Back in 1989, an American man and his brother bought a mystery box without knowing its contents. When they opened it, they found a white sports car which was used in the 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me. The film featured an iconic Lotus Esprit that could transform into a submarine and travel underwater. Nicknamed on-set as ‘Wet Nellie’, it was reportedly thought to have cost more than $100,000 (£78,400) to build in the 1970s. According to NBC News, Doug Redenius, the co-founder of the Ian Fleming Foundation said of the discovery: “They really didn’t know what it was at first. They had no idea how valuable their discovery was." It took more than 24 years after finding the car for the brothers to put it up for auction. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter In 2013, the Guardian reported that Elon Musk entered the London auction anonymously and outbid the competition, purchasing the submarine car for $997,000 (£616,000). He then revealed it was him. In a statement, he said: “It was amazing as a little kid in South Africa to watch James Bond in The Spy Who Loved Me drive his Lotus Espirit off a pier, press a button and have it transform into a submarine underwater. I was disappointed to learn that it can’t actually transform. What I’m going to do is upgrade it with a Tesla electric powertrain and try to make it transform for real.” How random. Mason Greenwood leaves Manchester United on loan
Mason Greenwood has left Manchester United to join LaLiga side Getafe on a season-long loan. The Spanish club will pay a small contribution towards his wages and no loan fee. While Greenwood has two years left on his contract at Old Trafford, United announced last week that the forward would not play for them again. The 21-year-old has not appeared in first-team football since January 2022 and United determined he would leave Old Trafford following a six-month internal investigation into his behaviour. After disturbing audio and pictures emerged on social media, the forward was charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behaviour before the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges after a key witness withdrew their cooperation. United’s chief executive Richard Arnold said he believed Greenwood was not guilty of the criminal charges and admitted the club had considered bringing him back into their squad before saying it was “mutually agreed” for him to move elsewhere as they concluded that “all those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United”. United said in a statement: “The move enables Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United. The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition.” Greenwood, who has been capped once by England, scored 35 goals in 129 games for United. He has been training alone, which means it may take longer before he is fit to make his Getafe debut. Getafe finished 15th in La Liga last season, scoring only 34 goals, and have only struck once in three matches this season. They announced the news with a social media post and a short statement on their website, that read: “Getafe Football Club have reached an agreement with Manchester United for the arrival of Mason Greenwood on loan for one season” and then listed some basic biographical information.
