Mikel Arteta defended his decision to play Bukayo Saka as the Arsenal winger limped out of their Champions League defeat to Lens. The Gunners had taken the lead through Gabriel Jesus but Adrien Thomasson levelled following a David Raya error before Saka hobbled out of the game. Lens would go on to win 2-1 courtesy of a second-half strike from Elye Wahi but it was the injury to Saka that will have concerned Arteta more. Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City visit the Emirates Stadium in five days and Saka’s involvement is now in doubt with the England forward having been forced off in the last three games. Asked if he regretted picking Saka following his issues against both Tottenham and Bournemouth, Arteta replied: “No. It was a knock that he had the other day and he was perfectly fine. It was a back-heel, an action that can produce that kind of injury. “Let’s see what the extent of it is and afterwards it’s too late. The last few were more knocks than anything else. “He hasn’t really missed games. We gave him a break against Brentford (in the Carabao Cup) last week and that was all. “He tried to backheel a ball in the first half and felt something muscular. He felt uncomfortable to carry on so we had to take him off. “We don’t know anything more. It was big enough not to allow him to continue to play the game and that’s a worry for us. “He was really looking forward to playing like every player. It was a big Champions League night. I painted a picture and the type of scenario we were going to face today and they all knew about it. “But this Champions League is so difficult to win away from home. Today we take a big lesson.” The defeat ended a forgettable 24 hours for Arsenal after bad weather grounded Arteta and his players at Luton airport for five hours on Monday as their journey to France was delayed. Anthony Joshua will fight Otto Wallin in Saudi Arabia on 23 December, on the same card as a bout between Deontay Wilder and Joseph Parker. The fights are just two of several heavyweight clashes that will take place in the same ring in Riyadh, with Daniel Dubois and Filip Hrgovic among the other boxers in action that night, while light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol is also set to compete. The event was officially announced at a press conference in London on Wednesday (15 November). Joshua, 34, and Wilder, 38, have long been linked to one another, and there will inevitably be frustration among fans that the Briton and American will share a ring on 23 December but without boxing each other. Joshua will instead box Wallin, whose sole professional loss came against Tyson Fury in 2019. The Swede, 32, almost secured a victory that night after inflicting a severe cut over Fury’s right eye. Wallin has since won six fights in a row, and his professional record stands at 26-1 (14 knockouts). Meanwhile, Wilder will fight Joseph Parker (33-3, 23 KOs), a teammate of Fury. The New Zealander is on a three-fight win streak, having bounced back well from a stoppage loss to Joe Joyce last year. Joshua (26-3, 23 KOs) and Wilder (43-2-1, 32 KOs) both beat Robert Helenius last time out, with “AJ” stopping the Finn in Round 7 in August, after Wilder secured a first-round knockout in October 2022. Joshua’s victory over Helenius was his second straight win after his back-to-back losses to Oleksandr Usyk, who took the unified heavyweight titles from AJ in 2021 and retained the gold in their 2022 rematch. Meanwhile, Wilder’s win against Helenius saw him respond positively to back-to-back defeats by Tyson Fury, who won the WBC belt from Wilder in 2020 and retained it against the American in 2021. The pair previously fought to a controversial draw in 2018. "People are talking like I've peaked when they've never even seen a peak in their career, so I don't know what they're talking about,” Joshua said, referring to comments made by Wallin, whom he beat twice in the amateurs and with whom he later sparred. It was the same city, the same arena and the same ring where the Irish icon suffered her first ever professional defeat in May, and it was the same opponent in Chantelle Cameron. But the stakes were different in Dublin this time, and the result had to be for Taylor. In the end, it was: a majority decision like six months ago, but this time in her favour, not Cameron’s. This time, it was the Englishwoman whose zero had to go, along with her undisputed super-lightweight titles. In a fight that was often messy, always mesmerising, and ultimately marginal, Taylor took all of those belts and added them to her undisputed lightweight gold. It was another stupefying moment in a career full of them, as a pioneer of women’s boxing – the pioneer – collected more accolades, not just in Cameron’s belts but in avenging a loss for the first time. And to do that, the Olympic gold medalist, now 37, had to fight her conqueror, fatigue, demons and more. But in her corner was a sea of Irish souls, flags and voices, willing her to a monumental victory. But then came Cameron’s best spell of the fight, as she began to invest in the body, spear Taylor with jabs, and weigh on the home fighter. Come the eighth round, Taylor looked to be standing only by virtue of leaning on Cameron. Perhaps she was hurt, for certain she was tired, yet still Taylor found reserves to unfurl hooks when needed. And in the ninth, Taylor was ferociously spirited, waiting for Cameron to close in then punishing the champion by unleashing combinations, as crimson crawled down Cameron’s forehead. It was the ultimate display of Taylor’s fighting soul, and it would seal her ultimate redemption. An ugly, stilted final round ensued, but Taylor and Cameron had arrived at the end – just not the very end, as some feared might be the case for Taylor. Two scorecards were hers – one more comfortably than it should have been, in all honesty – while the third was even. Cameron, a game competitor from start to finish, soon departed, but only after graciously applauding Taylor upon the revelation that the gold would be staying in Dublin. And Taylor will be staying in this sport for now, having defied every doubter on a night that the city desperately needed, amid a week of tragedy and shame.
