Sydney Sweeney's 'male gaze' photoshoot leaves fan's disappointed
American actress Sydney Sweeney has come under fire for a “male gaze” photo shoot that has left fans disappointed. The shoot was part of the magazine Variety's #PowerofYoungHollywood issue which featured the Euphoria actress as one of its cover stars. The controversy came when Variety shared a behind-the-scenes video on its Instagram showing a montage of clips from the shoot, sparking a big reaction from fans. One clip showed Sweeney wearing a short blue playsuit that bared her cleavage and extremely high pink heels. Her lipstick was baby pink and she could be seen licking a pink lollipop. Instagram users began leaving comments suggesting that the imagery of the shoot was overly sexualised and created for the male gaze. “Yeah there goes her chance to be taken seriously as an actress,” one person argued. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter In response to the backlash, some fans were unhappy with a section that appeared to have been removed from the video that saw Sweeney licking a dripping ice cream cone. Someone else said: “It is not just the ice cream part that is sexual and objectifying her. It's the whole male-gaze shoot. “If you are so afraid of public reaction, why won’t you think before you act instead of all the post-production editing.” Another disappointed fan commented: “Whose idea was this photoshoot? It’s tacky! Some women objectify themselves in a very sexual way and then complain about being taken seriously. “You don’t need to be doing sex faces and be half naked licking ice cream to tell us you’re part of the powerful young Hollywood. Lmao.” In the interview, the 25-year-old spoke about starting a family saying: "I always wanted to be a young mom. I love acting, I love the business, I love producing, I love all of it. But what’s the point if I’m not getting to share it with a family?" Have your say in our news democracy. TikTok of 'riverboat brawler' sparks confusion about its legitimacy
A man claiming to have been involved in the viral Alabama riverboat brawl has spoken out but people are sceptical about his identity. Footage of the brawl that took place at the Montgomery Riverfront Park in Alabama has swept social media sparking a whole host of memes. The incident is believed to have started when a disagreement between a male, believed to be a riverboat dock worker, and two other men escalated. An all-out brawl, involving multiple people, ensued and involved people using fold-up chairs as weapons and multiple people ending up in the water. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter It had to be broken up by police and four arrest warrants are currently in place. The town’s mayor made a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter). Mayor Steven L. Reed wrote: “Last night, the Montgomery Police Department acted swiftly to detain several reckless individuals for attacking a man who was doing his job. Warrants have been signed and justice will be served. “This was an unfortunate incident which never should have occurred.” Now, a man claiming to have been involved in the fight has taken to TikTok to “speak out”, with the clip being viewed more than 10 million times. In the video shared on the TikTok account @nov10scorpio a man could be seen with two black eyes and tissue stuffed up both of his nostrils. Speaking to the camera, he said: “Well, turns out that 65-year-old man can really f**king throw ‘em.” @nov10scorpio SPEAKS OUT !! #montgomery #alabama #riverboatbrawl #river #chair #boat #brawl #riverboatfight #dmpd But, eagle-eyed TikTokers have disputed his involvement in the infamous Montgomery brawl, arguing that there were no older people involved. One person commented: “That ain’t him fr?!? Y’all playin lol.” Another said: “[There’s] no way this is actually him.” “I’m not even sure this is the same guy. I feel like I’ve seen this before, I think it might be an older video,” one person theorised. Someone else wrote: “I don’t think this is really one of them but it’s hilarious.” Have your say in our news democracy. Scientists have located a legendary Egyptian city that never appeared on maps
Scientists have located a legendary Egyptian city that never appeared on maps
Experts have located a legendary lost city in Egypt that never appears on maps with the help of a mummy. Ancient Egyptians had an affinity for baboons thanks to their association with the God, Babi. Experts know that they were kept as pets in captivity and had their sharpest teeth removed to make them less harmful. And it is the Egyptians’ keeping of baboons that has led experts to the location of the mysterious Egyptian city of Punt thanks to their DNA. Gisela Kopp, a geneticist at the University of Konstanz, Germany who is studying baboon DNA explained to Live Science: “There were these stories that they got them from Punt, this fabled, mysterious land.” Punt has been mentioned in documentation from ancient Egypt, but experts have never been able to determine where it would actually lie on a map. But, in recent years, experts have been able to narrow down its exact location by looking at DNA from mummified baboons which have been discovered from the time period. Kopp and a group of colleagues were able to extract usable DNA from the remains of a mummified baboon believed to be from between 800 B.C. and 540 B.C. In their study, published in the journal eLife, they then compared that DNA to the genetic information of 14 baboons from known origins to compare specific information of geographic location. It revealed the baboon’s DNA was most closely related to populations from what are coastal areas of Eritrea today. Kopp explained, “It's close to this ancient port of Adulis”. Adulis is also mentioned in records dating from 300 B.C. onwards and is known as being a place that traders travelled to for wild animals. Kopp explained that there is now a working theory that Adulis and Punt may have been essentially the same place. “Maybe the earlier Punt was in a similar location to where Adulis was [later] established,” Kopp said. The study is based on the DNA of one mummified baboon, as the attempted extraction of fragile ancient DNA from nine other baboon mummies failed to yield usable samples. Experts hope to replicate their study with more DNA samples to gain more information from different time periods. At least five foreign nationals among 21 killed in ‘apocalyptic’ Venice bus crash – latest
At least 21 people have been killed after a passenger bus plunged from an overpass near Venice in an “apocalyptic” accident, according to Italian authorities. The vehicle was travelling from Venice to Marghera when the shocking accident took place at the overpass in Mestre on Tuesday evening. “It completely went off the road, it flew off the bridge. It was a bus; it was a highway. We are in mourning,” Venice mayor Luigi Brugnaro told Italy’s national broadcaster RAI. At least four Ukrainians and one German tourist were among the dead, local authorities said. Morris Ceron, general director of the municipality of Venice, told RAI that children were among the victims of the crash and that the bus was believed to have foreigners aboard as it headed towards a campsite. Luca Zaia, president of Italy’s Veneto region, called the bus crash “a tragedy of enormous proportions” and also confirmed that “the victims and injured are of various nationalities, not just Italians.” He said that more than 20 ambulances had been used at the scene and also the Treviso air ambulance. The injured were taken to hospitals in Mestre, Mirano, Padua and Treviso.
