Gabri Veiga rubbishes Toni Kroos criticism of Saudi Pro League transfer

Gabri Veiga has dismissed criticism from fellow footballers over his move to the Saudi Pro League during the summer transfer window.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a breakout campaign with Celta Vigo in 2022/23, scoring 11 goals alongside four assists as his side finished 13th in La Liga.

The midfielder's impressive performances attracted admiring glances from Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid and Barcelona, while Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Newcastle all later held talks over a possible switch to the Premier League.

Serie A champions Napoli then appeared to have moved ahead in the running, agreeing a fee with Celta Vigo, but Al Ahli swooped to secure a deal for the Spain Under-21 international.

Veiga's decision to move to the Middle East so early in his career prompted ridicule around the football world, with Real Madrid and Germany legend Toni Kroos branding the move "embarrassing". However, Veiga insisted his choice to join the raft of ageing stars swapping top level football for the Saudi Pro League was not guided by the money on offer.

He said: "I understand that everyone has their opinion, but there were other decisions that tipped the balance. Among all the options, I think it was the one that allowed me to continue growing as a footballer and mature in a league that is growing a lot.

"You never know how much a league like this can grow. One day my intention may also be to win titles in Europe, play in the Champions League, you never know. Two years ago I couldn't imagine being in Arabia either and now I'm very happy.

"I watch every game. Football is being very unusual with [Celta Vigo] and they should have taken many more points. I think with the great coach and the great players that they have, they will turn things around."

Veiga's Al Ahli, who also boast Roberto Firmino, Riyad Mahrez and Allan Saint-Maximin as squad members, currently sit fifth in the Pro League, four points behind leaders Al Hilal.
