Wednesday's matchup between the Yankees and White Sox could be postponed due to unbreathable air quality at Yankee Stadium.

The New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox series may have to be postponed after air quality conditions worsened in New York City on Wednesday afternoon.

New York and Chicago played the first game of the series at Yankees Stadium on Tuesday despite the NYC mayor issuing an air quality health advisory earlier that day.

Smoke from wildfires in Canada has been gradually spreading to the Tri-State area, and fans at Tuesday's opener posted harrowing pictures of Yankee Stadium's dystopian atmosphere. The air quality has only grown more hazardous since then with more smoke and pollution blanketing the city last night.

As of Wednesday morning, New York City reportedly ranked second to Delhi, India for the worst air quality and pollution out of 100 tracked countries. The city scored an Air Quality Index of 160 and has once again been placed under health advisories.

What does this mean for the scheduled New York-Chicago game at 7 p.m. ET?

The show may not go on, depending on how unhealthy the MLB deems the air quality come first pitch.

Are the Yankees playing today?

As dozens of wildfires continue to burn across eastern Canada, the air quality in New York may not clear up for several days. Meteorologists expect the conditions to last until the weekend, which could force the league to reschedule the next two games of the Yankees-White Sox series for a later date.

Chicago bested New York in the series opener, and the Yankees showed just how desperately they needed Aaron Judge as they recorded zero hits through the first six innings. They almost made a triumphant comeback in the ninth inning but flamed out in the end, losing 3-2.

Could these putrid weather conditions foreshadow more bad omens for the Yankees with Judge still out due to a toe injury? The air hangs thick with potential disappointment.
