CINCINNATI (AP) — Corbin Burnes struck out the side in the sixth inning after nearly collapsing in the fifth in oppressive humidity, Victor Caratini singled in a run in the seventh and Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cincinnati Reds 1-0 on Friday night.
After his 10th strikeout, Burnes squatted behind the mound with his head lowered as teammates and trainers rushed over. Burnes took several big gulps of water and spoke to the training staff. He took a couple of warmup pitches, then retired Matt McLain on an infield pop to end the inning.
The game-time temperature was 91 degrees with the high humidity. Burnes (8-5) struck out 13 in six innings. He allowed only two hits and two walks to help the Brewers tie the Reds atop the NL Central standings.
Devin Williams closed for his 21st save.
Cincinnati starter Graham Ashcraft (5-6) allowed three hits through six innings.
DODGERS 6, METS 0
NEW YORK (AP) — Julio Urías combined with three relievers on a one-hitter as Los Angeles extended New York's losing streak to three games.
Urías (7-5) pitched six innings and allowed only a leadoff double to Brandon Nimmo that was initially ruled a home run.
Mookie Betts hit a bases-loaded RBI single and Freddie Freeman followed with a two-run double after the Dodgers were held hitless by Justin Verlander for 4 1/3 innings despite drawing six walks.
Miguel Rojas added an RBI single in the sixth off David Peterson as the Dodgers won their fifth straight and 13th in 18 games. All-Star slugger J.D. Martinez padded the lead in the eighth with his 23rd homer and Will Smith capped the scoring with a groundout in the ninth.
Verlander (3-5) allowed three runs and two hits in five innings.
BLUE JAYS 7, DIAMONDBACKS 2
TORONTO (AP) — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homered in his first plate appearance following his All-Star Home Run Derby win earlier in the week, Brandon Belt drove in the tiebreaking run in the seventh inning and Toronto sent Arizona to its sixth loss in eight games.
Matt Chapman had three hits and an RBI and Whit Merrifield drove in two runs as Toronto opened the second half of the season with its sixth win in seven games. The Blue Jays are 17-7 against NL opponents.
Guerrero led off the second with a 426-foot drive off Arizona starter Ryne Nelson for his 14th home run.
Blue Jays right-hander Trevor Richards (1-1) pitched 1 2/3 innings for the win despite giving up a homer to Gabriel Moreno.
Diamondbacks reliever Kyle Nelson (4-2) took the loss, retiring just one of the three batters he faced.
BRAVES 9, WHITE SOX 0
ATLANTA (AP) — Matt Olson hit a first-inning grand slam, Charlie Morton won his fifth straight start and major league-leading Atlanta routed Chicago.
Olson, the NL leader with 30 homers and 76 RBIs, made it 4-0 with his seventh career grand slam and his second this season. Atlanta leads the majors with 170 homers and has gone deep in 27 straight games, the longest streak in the franchise’s modern era.
Morton (10-6) gave up three hits, walked one and struck out four in seven innings.
Michael Kopech (3-8) gave up four runs, one hit and four walks in two-thirds of an inning. Chicago has lost six of seven, eight of 10 and 19 of 28.
PADRES 8, PHILLIES 3
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Manny Machado, Juan Soto, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Gary Sánchez homered, Yu Darvish struck out nine in six sharp innings and San Diego beat Philadelphia in a rematch of last year’s National League Championship Series.
Sánchez and Tatis homered in the third and Machado went deep in the sixth for the Padres, who have won six of seven. Darvish (6-6) kept the Phillies at bay, scattering five hits, walking two and allowing a run.
Cristopher Sánchez (0-3) took the loss, giving up three runs in five innings.
GIANTS 6, PIRATES 4
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Rookies Patrick Bailey and Luis Matos hit RBI singles during a three-run rally in the seventh inning that sent San Francisco past Pittsburgh.
Mauricio Llovera (1-0) got two outs for the win. Wilmer Flores, Matos and Michael Conforto had two hits each for San Francisco. Conforto’s two-run single in the fifth broke a scoreless tie.
Ji Man Choi homered for the Pirates, and a balk by Ross Stripling later in the inning allowed the Pirates to tie it.
All three Giants runs in the seventh were charged to Colin Holderman (0-2).
