LAS VEGAS, NEVADA: A 49-year-old man, Aaron Michael Cooney, is accused of fatally stabbing his mother Linda Cooney on Mother’s Day, claiming that “we need a new one.” The incident took place on Sunday morning, May 14, at a home on Caprino Avenue near North Jones Boulevard and West Smoke Ranch Road in Sin City.

According to an arrest report from the Metropolitan Police Department released on Tuesday, May 16, "On May 14, 2023, at approximately 6.25 am, LVMPD Dispatch received a report of an unresponsive female at a residence located in the 6100 block of Caprino Avenue. Arriving officers located a woman suffering from apparent stab wounds in the backyard. Medical personnel responded and pronounced the victim deceased at the scene."

The release further stated, "During the course of the investigation, LVMPD Homicide detectives determined the suspect, later identified as 49-year-old Aaron Cooney, had stabbed his mother multiple times. According to WFTV9, the mother, who was found by her other son, was stabbed in her back and also, stabbed in her forearms, head, armpit chest and legs.

Who is Aaron Michael Cooney?

Cooney was taken into the custody without incident and was transported to the Clark County Detention Centre where he was booked for open murder. He has since been charged with an additional count of murder in the first degree with the use of a deadly weapon where the victim is an older person.

According to the police, Cooney reportedly Aaron, “That’s not our mom anyways. We need a new one,” reports Las Vegas Review Journal. Also, when he asked Cooney where their mother was before finding her in the pool, he allegedly replied, “I stabbed her last night. She’s gone.” However, as per reports, he told police that his mother died three days earlier and said, “You guys know I’m not a murderer.”

Past criminal history

The outlet suggested that this was not the first time Cooney was picked up by the cops. In fact, he pleaded guilty to petit larceny and was sentenced to counseling in 2003. Again in 2014, he pleaded guilty to domestic battery, and in 2018, he was sent to Lakes Crossing after he was charged with kidnapping and grand larceny, but was found incompetent to stand trial.

As per Law&Crime, the suspect first appeared in court on Monday, May 15, when he was provisionally granted a court-appointed attorney. On Wednesday, May 17, his first formally-designated initial appearance took place where he asserted his Fifth and Sixth Amendment rights, and medical privacy rights.
