The Atlanta Braves received an injury scare courtesy of Eddie Rosario. While it's unclear if an IL stint will be necessary, Rosario's hamstring issue is more evidence Alex Anthopoulos should trade for an outfielder.
Rosario left the Braves last game against the Chicago White Sox with a hamstring issue. That was two days ago, and it's unclear if he'll be forced out of action against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
While it would be preferable for Rosario to return, and the Braves to hold onto their minor-league assets rather than make a trade at all, there are plenty of affordable outfield bats available as the trade deadline nears.
Against the White Sox, Rosario was replaced by veteran Kevin Pillar. The Braves have done an excellent job collecting dependable depth players at an otherwise weak position all season long. They can do so again in a simple trade with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Why would the Atlanta Braves make this trade?
Tyler O'Neill is recovering from an injury of his own, but when healthy he's a two-time gold glover and capable right-handed bat. If Rosario has a clear weakness, it's his defense, so odds are this could even serve as an upgrade for an Atlanta squad without many clear issues. Left field, which O'Neill has plenty of experience playing, should serve well for him in the ATL if given the opportunity.
Why would the St. Louis Cardinals make this trade?
The Cards would take advantage of the sense of urgency in Atlanta, if that really is the case. Vodnik and De Avila are nearing the big leagues themselves, but they rank No. 9 and No. 23, respectively, in a weak Atlanta farm system. Both have put up impressive numbers in Double-A this season. John Mozeliak has stated the team will prioritize pitching at the trade deadline. While both players are relative flyers, O'Neill is a rental, and the lesser of the two available Cards outfielders with Dylan Carlson still on the market.
