According to GLAAD's website, there's been an extreme uptick in people who refer to themselves as non-binary, an umbrella term to describe someone whose gender identity doesn't match their assigned-at-birth sex, including those who are trans and genderfluid. This has led many companies to rethink how they label and market certain products that were traditionally designed with only heterosexual, cis men and women in mind. While the sex toy industry still has a long way to go, the brands that don't limit themselves to the gender binary have created some of the most exciting options on the market that push what a sex toy can look like and do.
In a recent effort to be more inclusive toward the LGBTQIA+ community, for example, many retailers are moving away from sorting toys by gender to sorting them by category. Instead of "male" and "female" toys, you might see toys sorted by vibrators, butt plugs, dildos, or cock rings. Some brands are also leaning away from sex toys that resemble genitalia, preferring a smoother, more abstract shape that can be used on any gender identity.
Eva Goicochea, founder of sexual wellness company maude, tells Refinery29, "While the industry standard has been to conflate sexuality with gender, we believe they're different things. Gender is a spectrum and sex as an act is totally human, so we make products with purpose, body safety, and universal design in mind. In fact, we don't even call our vibe a toy — it devalues it."
Ahead, we've compiled a few of our favorite gender-neutral vibrators that are designed to be used on both vulvas and penises — and usually nipples, too. Because every gender identity deserves to feel pleasure.
